Excess amniotic fluid in pregnancy

I had my 28 week scan and was told I need to be tested for gestational diabetes because I have excess fluid

Has anyone had excess fluid and it's not actually been related to any cause?
It's the only symptom I would have otherwise

Its called polyhydramnious. I had it with my last. And to me I'm showing signs with my current pregnancy. I was tested for Gd but came back negative. They told me its just one of those things. I was induced at 37 weeks because of it. X

Elllicam · 23/06/2021 16:01

I had it with my second and I did end up having GD.

FJ459 · 23/06/2021 16:04

Yes I had polyhydramnios too! Most of the time (and in my case) it's just one of those things and there's no reason. I had to have an elective section because there was so much fluid the baby turned transverse. My case was severe though. He was perfectly well when he was born Smile.

I think it can be a sign but often is unrelated. They still need to check for it though. I've got borderline low amniotic fluid- not enough for them to be worried, but enough for me Blush... I'm hoping I was just a bit dehydrated. Just had my GDT test for other reasons and it's a bit of a faff.

Yes I did with my 3rd. I was tested for gestational diabetes. I didn't have it. The only problem it caused was baby couldn't engage her head as there was too much fluid floating around. They also kept a very close eye on me from about 36 weeks as when there is a lot of fluid if your waters break the cord can drop down and restrict oxygen. They told me if my waters broke to kneel down and keep my bum in the air.... All was well I went into hospital at 36 weeks and had a planned c section just before 38 weeks. C Section nothing to do with excess fluid. I had a previous difficult delivery . This was 22 years ago so advice and practice may of changed.

Yep, had it with 2 singletons and milder with one of our twins. No GD but they were all big babies.
I think it could be a genetic link for ours, 3 of our 5 had it and they all have the same blood type, the 2 that didn't have it have a different blood type. Current has normal fluid levels so I'm interested to see if she has the same blood type as the other 2 that had normal levels.

Chelyanne · 23/06/2021 16:27

Oh and mine didn't cause any issues in pregnancy or at birth.

I had it with my second, I was having an elective section for other (unrelated) issues anyway and towards 38 weeks my fluid levels started to come within more normal ranges.
When I had my c section baby had to have an NG tube in & out before I could feed him as he was very mucousy due to the excess fluid. Other than that thought everything was perfectly fine!

Papillon33 · 24/06/2021 12:13

Hi @Greenrubber, about 4 days before my due date they told me I had excess fluid, so it was quite a shock. They changed me from midwife led to consultant led, so that worried me too. When my boy was born they took him away for tests for a couple of hours to check everything was OK (my partner went with him) and it was all fine xx

LBTM · 24/06/2021 12:16

I had it with my 3rd. It's worth checking if it's just a bit high which usually means nothing or quite a bit too high, which is more likely to indicate a problem. I was induced at 10 days overdue and I do wonder if I didn't go into labour because of the excess fluid. All was healthy with the baby.

elliejjtiny · 24/06/2021 12:23

I had it with my 4th. Must have been quite severe because I was measuring 52cm at 34 weeks and went down to 39cm when my waters broke. Even then when I had my c-section the surgeon commented about how I had loads of fluid still. In my case it was because baby had a cleft palate so couldn't swallow very well.

Greenrubber · 24/06/2021 15:28

So I dropped my DD off at nursery today and was asked by a couple of mums how my scan went
When I told them that I had excess fluid they both had also experienced it one had no issues the other had GD but all was well
I didn't realise how common this was
Thanks for all your comments
My test for GD is on Tuesday so fingers crossed
