Low lying placenta covering cervix

I’m a FTM and have just gone for my 20 week scan, they identified a low lying placenta which is covering my cervix. I think she said partially?

I have been referred for a further scan at 32 weeks and I’ve just had an appointment letter to see the consultant after the scan.

Has anyone any experiences of this they wouldn’t mind sharing with me please and hopefully put my mind at ease? Does the placenta usually move upwards in time?

I was a bit surprised by the consultant appointment after the scan as I thought they would just check if the placenta has moved and send me away again.

Thanks 😊

I had this. It usually moves, but mine didn't.

I could only find horror stories on the Internet! But it was absolutely fine. I had a small bleed at 35+2. Admitted to hospital which was actually a lovely rest. She was born perfectly healthy at 36+5. C section was fine, very straightforward, recovery was a little tough for first week or two.

In all liklihood your placenta will move, but if it doesn't you'll still be ok.

@Livingmagicallyagain thanks for sharing your experience, very reassuring Smile definitely only seeing horror stories on the internet!

Following as I was told the same. My scan is at 36 weeks so feel like I have to wait a long time to see how my birth is going to go Confused

Clm22 · 22/06/2021 20:30

@Thefaceofboe that seems late I thought it was supposed to be 32 weeks. I can understand that’s frustrating waiting so long to know how you will deliver baby.

I was told at 20 week scan I had a low lying placenta and was referred to a scan at 32 weeks. At my 32 w scan they said it has moved more than 9 cm above cervix and that the baby's head is below it so no concerns.
Good luck with your one Smile. They told me in most cases placenta moves up.

Lemongrass9 · 22/06/2021 21:50

I have this too, I’ve been told that in 90% of cases the placenta moves…but I’m sure we’ll all be fine if not. I’m 31 weeks now and had no bleeds or anything so far.
My scan to check is at 36 weeks and I’ve been told if not moved I’ll be booked for section at 37 weeks so not much notice! Planning to be more or less ready for baby by my 36 week scan just in case.

I had this with the lower of our twins, I didn't have any bleeds die to it. It had moved enough by 32wk but then she turned breech and I ended up with an elcs anyway.

Due not die

Don’t panic, they just handed me a leaflet on it at my 20 week scan and sent me off. It wasn’t til I got home that I read it and had no clue which one I had or how bad it was. Needing a section wasn’t an issue for me because I was angling towards one anyway but just wanted to know if there was anything I shouldn’t be doing (light workouts, sex etc). I don’t think mine was actually covering it and they say 80% or something move by the 32 week scan. I had a growth scan just a couple of weeks before it and she said it was still too low but at the 32 week scan it had moved 2cm away. I’m not sure if it’s likely to move if it’s covering it though? I think mine was just too close. Don’t worry, worst comes to worst it’s a section I think. Mine said they do them at 38 weeks instead of 39 too, I’m guessing to lower the risk of you going naturally first

Mylasmummy2102 · 23/06/2021 07:43

This is my third baby and never heard of it until I went to my 18 weeks scan I then had bleeding on and off and by 32 weeks it had completely moved out the way in the majority of cases they move lovely so try not to worry xxx

kikisparks · 23/06/2021 07:53

I’ve got this too (21 weeks just now), hopefully it moves, important thing is if get any bleeding to let them know straight away.

RachShad · 23/06/2021 11:16

I was told this too but by 30 weeks it had moved! It does move in most cases so try not to worry x

Clm22 · 23/06/2021 11:20

Thank you everyone for sharing your stories and experiences with me 😊 It’s nice to have some reassurance from others who have been through it and to hear how it went. Hopefully it does move but it’s nice to hear from others who went on to have a section and all was ok.
@sarah13xx I had a very similar experience, they just finished my 20 week scan and left me with you have a low lying cervix and need another scan. I left with no information or how bad it is, so just a waiting game until the 32 week scan. And no bleeding so far 🤞

I was told I had a low lying placenta at 20wk scan. They had me back in for another scan at around 30 weeks (ish) and it had moved upward as my uterus had expanded. I still ended up having a c-section though as my baby was breach.

Restingpotato · 23/06/2021 11:47

I found out at 20 weeks and convinced myself it would move as 90% apparently do. Mine did not so I had a planned section at 37+5, slightly early as I did have some bleeding and baby was transverse. Section was a good experience but I think I'd have been better mentally preparing myself for a c section and packing my hospital bag sooner! Hope the rest of your pregnancy is straightforward and it moves for you, but if it doesn't it shouldn't be a big issue!

Chelyanne · 23/06/2021 11:52

All placentas move about as baby grows. With this one I was told the placenta was anterior at 20wk, had a growth scan at 31+6wk and it is now in fundal position.

anotherwinkywinkybumbum · 23/06/2021 23:12

I had placenta previa major and was told there was no way it could move as it was covering my opening like a hammock. Consultant and everyone I saw told me I was highly likely to bleed and one of those bleeds would mean hospital for eme emergency section. Was also told I would no doubt need a transfusion as highly likely to lose a lot of blood during section.

Well, no it didn't move but none of the other scary stuff happened at all. No bleeding ever, no emergency section but a lovely planned one with minimal blood loss.

I spent 18 weeks fearing the worst and I really wish I could turn back time and chill a bit.
