Ate soil on unwashed veg..?

Chomping into tomatoes that I did rinse first I realised they still had soil on the skin and I’d eaten some with the soil on.

I know this because I didn’t have my glasses on and could see what I thought were just marks on the skin.

How likely is it that I would actually get toxoplasmosis from something like this? I did rinse them but clearly not well enough. Please don’t tell me next time wash them better or wear my glasses because I absolutely will be doing haha!

I’ve never had cats or really done much gardening so it’s unlikely I’ve been exposed before.

I'd say try not to worry about it. I'd bet that every pregnant woman has ingested soil at some point in her pregnancy!

HakunaYourTatas · 22/06/2021 16:21

Thank you! I’ve tried to be so careful and I thought I washed the bloody things!

You're welcome! I did quite a few 'wrong' things in pregnancy and remember the feeling well of realising that my steak was slightly too rare or that actually I should have taken more care with this, that and the other. It's all a bit of a balance though and it's important not to drive yourself to distraction worrying about every small detail.

For me, the easiest way to wash salad things is to chuck them in a bowl with cold salty water. Washes any straggling beasts off too!

There'll have been precious little soil on unwashed tomatoes; they don't grow in the ground?

Bells3032 · 22/06/2021 16:33

I'm 7 and a half weeks. I only realised you were meant to wash veg in pregnancy. my family never washed fruit and veg (weird I know). tbh a small amount is likely to do you any harm and it's probably likely, unless you always wash it very very thoroughly you've been in contact with it before anyway. it's only dangerous if you are infected with it the first time in pregnancy

HakunaYourTatas · 22/06/2021 16:34

Yeah do you know what @GreyhoundG1rl I did think this I thought where has the soil even come from but it was definitely there because I tried wiping it and it came off

Do you think a cat has pood in the soil? If not, there's no risk! (Unless there are rotted dead mouse corpses in the earth too, but you'd surely have noticed).

HakunaYourTatas · 22/06/2021 16:52

I have no idea haha! They were from the supermarket (originally Morocco) but definitely soiley!

As I understand it, soil is only a toxoplasmosis risk if it contains with cat faeces (and the cat faeces are contaminated with toxoplasmosis). So I think it’s really, really unlikely that commercially farmed tomatoes would have traces of soil with contaminated cat faeces on them. But I get it, I’ve had similar panics in the past!

Hi how are you doing now? I am in a similar position: I ate an washed apple but may have ingested the mud/dirt around the stem, which is too deep down to be washed!

Wallawallakoala · 04/08/2022 00:40

I'm sorry I should have updated! Name changed now but I have a very healthy very active 9 month old! Try not to worry, easy for me to say but the chances of cat poo on those few particles is almost none.

Wallawallakoala · 04/08/2022 00:41

Especially an apple that has been on a tree and probably hasn't come into contact with soil. It's something I really wish I'd not spent time worrying about.

Thanks for getting back to me, I'm less worried about toxo now but I do have a another fear which is listeria! It is also a horrible bacteria and I can't get rid of the thought that the mud around the apple stem may have it.

Wallawallakoala · 05/08/2022 08:17

I'm really not sure if it is actually mud round that bit anyway! Give your midwife a call, it's so hard dealing with this kind of anxiety.

Sheep carry toxo too.
