Fasting blood test and accidentally had coffee, help!

I have a blood test at 10. It's just the early pregnancy test where they check for everything, not a specific glucose test. The receptionist told me to not eat beforehand. Without thinking, I had about 4 mouthfuls of coffee with milk before realising. Should I go anyway? I'm not in the UK if that makes any difference. Help!

That’s a drink, not food. You’ll be fine.

AtlasPine · 22/06/2021 05:28

Coffee does raises your blood sugar. You need to tell them you had it or you may get a reading which sounds worse than it is.

Feather12 · 22/06/2021 05:29

The last time I had a fasting blood test it was only fasting for 4 hours before the test. Which is a completely normal time period for most people to not eat anything anyway. A few mouthfuls of coffee won’t matter at all.

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 05:29

Wont the milk in the coffee affect my blood sugar?

Oh dear you guys obvs haven't had GD! This WILL affect your blood sugar levels if you have GD but probably not if you don't. But it will affect the test so you must tell them and they'll probably reschedule.

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 05:32

Sorry just saw the other replies. One of the tests is for glucose. I should probably rearrange shouldnt I?

Four sips of coffee/milk really will not matter, unless you drank it pretty much right before the test. Tell them when you go in and get their advice if you like.

I have diabetes as does my daughter so I am very familiar with blood glucose readings and this is just not going to matter. It’ll be long gone by the time you take your test.

AtlasPine · 22/06/2021 05:36

I was pre diabetic a year ago and lost weight bringing it down to normal levels. I experimented with what spiked my levels and plain black coffee definitely gave me a spike in the morning (from testing before and after). I’m not saying coffee is bad for you but that it can spike the level. If it does that to you, it could lift the level to a normal rate for non fasting but abnormal for fasting, making it seem like you are heading for GD. You need to call and tell them - they will advise as to whether you should reschedule or not.

Ninkanink · 22/06/2021 05:36

Although, why are you asking here? Can you not phone in and ask before you go in for the test?

AtlasPine · 22/06/2021 05:37

Although as Ninkanink says - it may have gone by the time the test is done. I’m not an expert but retelling my experience.

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 05:40

Thanks is everyone! The clinic isnt open yet and my proficiency in the language is severely tested over the phone which is why I havent contacted them yet. They are very close so I will go in as soon as they open to confirm.

Good idea - and keep fasting until you speak to them. Hope it goes well and good luck with the pregnancy!

Ninkanink · 22/06/2021 05:43

I was working under the admittedly potentially misguided assumption that you meant you have a test at 10 uk time which is 5 hours from now. If that’s the case it will be definitely make no difference at all.

If it’s two hours from now it also won’t make any difference at all.

But I would still just phone in and check, for your own peace of mind. I’ll be staggered if they advise you to change your appointment unless you’ve drunk it in the hour before (and even then I’d be very surprised if they advise cancellation, if I’m honest).

Ninkanink · 22/06/2021 05:44

Ah crosspost, that does make sense. Yes I’d go in as planned and ask since it’s close anyway.

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 05:50

@Ninkanink yes I converted the times to UK time so UK mumsnetters had a better idea of the timeframe.

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 05:51

Oh my gosh...the test would be 8am UK time. What is wrong with me today!!!

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 22/06/2021 05:53

I’m sure it’ll be fine. However going in and asking is your best bet since they’re best able to advise.

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 05:59

Thank you. It was just such a pain to get used to the medical system where I am and jumo through all the hoops to even get the blood test sorted, I am so mad at myself for potentially messing it up. I will call into them as soon as they open and try to explain.

Problem is if you’re border line it could tip you into the GD category which is not a diagnosis you want if not necessary.

CovidCorvid · 22/06/2021 06:23

I’m a midwife btw and if someone rang me and said they’d done this I’d say cancel. Though I admit I have no evidence or guideline telling me how much a little bit of milk a few hours before can affect the result. But my thought would be not worth the risk.

Ninkanink · 22/06/2021 06:30

Uhm so you admit you know nothing at all about it and you’d advise that? Seems a bit odd.

A spike will be gone by three hours. If it isn’t OP will definitely need help managing her blood glucose. In which case it’s better she take the test so that she can start dealing with it.

Even people with type 1 diabetes can have a 10g carb snack without taking insulin to manage it. That’s twice the carb content of 100ml of full fat milk.

Ninkanink · 22/06/2021 06:36

Apologies! Just read that back and it sounds way more combative than intended...once in a while i channel AIBU/FWR when it’s really not warranted. Flowers

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 07:26

Update: went a bit earlier to tell them. Not only was the coffee not an issue but they did my bloods there and then so I dont have to wait until my appointment. Thanks for the handhold. I'm not very good at the language here (I am learning though) and it stresses me out having to figure these things out. Spoke it enough to explain my situation though. Thanks everyone!

👍👍 Glad it all worked out!

Anonapapple · 22/06/2021 07:36
