Are Moses Baskets safe?

Hi all :)
I was thinking of getting a moses basket for the first few months, as our flat is small and it would fit nicely by the bed. It's also very mobile so I can transport it by the handles to different rooms during the day, e.g when I'm working at the computer for several hours and baby is sleeping, I can keep the basket next to me.
They also look adorable!

My only concern is that a lot of them are lined, e.g. clair-de-lune.co.uk/collections/moses-baskets/products/waffle-palm-moses-basket
and I worry the baby might wriggle or role into a position where their mouth is pushed against the side and they can't breathe. Is this a valid concern? Would it be safe if you used one with holes and no lining?

Thanks!

@HavelockVetinari

Could you get a next-to-me cot? Safer than a moses basket. They can be expensive but look on eBay, Facebook etc. for a second hand one, baby won't know or care if it's not brand new.
How do you figure the next to me is safer? There have been safety concerns about bedside cribs after a baby died while sleeping in one. Moses baskets have been used for thousands of years and are perfectly safe.

@Eachpeachpears

Moses baskets are absolutely fine but I guarantee your baby will not want to be put down and will want to be held by you. I would cancel all expectations of working at the computer while baby sleeps soundly next to you. Google the 4th trimester
I work as a freelance translator so I'm free to accept and reject work as I like. I'm hoping to not work for the first couple of months to see what sort of routine the baby gets into, then, if it is feasible, accept just a few small projects a week.

@Eachpeachpears you cannot "guarantee" that! Every baby is completely different

My baby was more than happy to nap in her bouncer seat or the carrycot part of the pram and would then be transferred to the next2me in our room at night.

A next2me would be easy enough to wheel between rooms, but you would need to detach the straps that attach it to the bed each time.

We never had a Moses basket as too many people I knew said their babies didn't like them or barely used them) and I found the pram carrycot was essentially the same thing

As tempting as it is, do not lift the basket when the baby is in it. The handles could break or as PP said the baby could slide out down the stairs.

@Serenissima123 I have purchased a next to me crib for night time, to have next to my bed. Plus a Moses basket for downstairs naps. I will say, I ordered the exact same Moses basket you are looking at and the stand was horrendously unstable. Wish I had read the reviews before purchasing! The basket itself is beautiful so I ended up just buying another stand.
With regards to safety, Moses baskets are perfectly safe. I would recommend reading lullabytrust website for all up to date info ☺️ x

@MsSquiz there's always one isn't there. It's an expression. Op knows I cannot guarantee that and I doubt she's going to go to a lawyer when her baby likes being put down to say "I want to sue eachpeachpears, she said this wouldn't happen" 🙄

tuxedocat · 21/06/2021 16:33

@snowballer

Ignore the comments about not being able to work - i took my son to work with me and whilst work was sporadic is it achievable.

Haha! Ignore everyone else's experience because mine was different, and theirs are all therefore invalid!

All babies are different. OP might have a sleeper, or she might have one like many of us who wouldn't be put down.

Not what I said at all was it! I didn’t say anyone else’s comments were invalid and mine was different. Everyone has a different experience.

I simply said it IS do able when so many people were saying ‘oh my god, you’ll never work til they are in school!’ Which is far from true and some mothers don’t have an option but to work.

Exactly why I followed on with the fact a sling is very helpful for a baby that doesn’t want to be put down for someone who might WANT or NEED to work, that was all.

@Eachpeachpears yes, the one is you! Telling the op the baby won't want to be put down and she shouldn't bother making plans to work!

Thanks! Which stand did you replace it with?

Excuse me? What did I say that was not nice?

Ogwen · 21/06/2021 22:19

That was to @Ednadidit- don’t know why the quote didn’t work.

Yes, we were all first timers once, and there is nothing unkind about gently letting someone know that working for several hours a day while a baby sleeps may not be realistic. Even the most chilled out, nap friendly baby I’ve ever known only napped for, at most, 2 hours at a time.

lavenderandwisteria · 21/06/2021 22:23

Ds still fits in his basket and he is six months, although he hasn’t used it since he was tiny. He is on the smaller side, though.

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 21/06/2021 22:28

I loved our moses basket, we also had the rocker for it next to our bed and if our dd stirred in the night I just had to rock it a tiny bit and she'd go straight back to sleep. Always felt very very safe, as long as you do all the right things bedding wise. Our dd was in hers for 5 months as she was quite small.

bubblesforlife · 21/06/2021 22:40

My baby is 5.5 months. She was a long baby, so at first we used the Moses basket for naps, she slept really well in it; we got the Clare de Lune one that rocked! We loved it. We found at first the Chico next2me was too big for her those early weeks so we actually put the Moses basket into it at night. She slept really well. Eventually she did outgrow the Moses basket and now sleeps excellently in her next2me for
Many months. But I do rate the Moses basket for those early weeks. My husband would carry her down in the Moses basket (from the bottom not the handles) at night.
We didn’t buy sheets for it, we used 70X70cm Muslins in a diamond shape! Fitted brilliant as we went thought a lot.
So Moses basket gets a big yes for me, but i do recommend more long term thinking as it will only last maybe 12 weeks!!

Serenissima123 · 21/06/2021 23:23

@MsSquiz @Eachpeachpears don't worry I wasn't offended at being told work may be unrealistic with a newborn, and I appreciate the reminder that we are all beginners once. Let's all relax Wink

I’m a member of a safe infant sleep group on fb and a post was shared recently that in Australia, Moses baskets aren’t considered safe for sleep. I think it was due to the padded sides xx

Somethingsnappy · 22/06/2021 10:39

The advice is that babies sleep in the same room as you for 6 months, even for daytime naps. With that in mind, you'll be with your baby, so will be able to intervene if you think they are in a position that you are not comfortable with. Moses baskets are widely used in this country. Your baby will have outgrown it by the time that unsupervised naps are likely.

Congratulations on your pregnancy!
