Sore hand/wrist from cannula?

I had a c section Wednesday afternoon, had the cannula put in then (was quite had to get in and hurt Sad) it was left in for 24 hours incase needed again
Once out my hand has been pretty bruised and swollen, I obviously still have the pregnancy swelling too
Is it normal for it to be so sore and my wrist too? Feels really bruised 😣

Yes that happened me when I had a cannula for previous surgery and my first csection. With my second cs I asked for it to be done on my left hand because at least I'd still have use of my dominant hand while it hurt like hell.

Yes it is normal. I remember mine being quite sore after having one in place for a few days but it did get better.

Yes, I had a canulas in both hands during labour and for 1.5 - 2 days after and my hands were so bruised and sore afterwards. The soreness wore off after a couple of days

Yes had the same with no2 son... they couldn't find a small enough needle 🤨 so the bloody thing was nearly up my wrist!! and it hurt all the way through labour... not as much as labour! It went down after a week or so

SunnySideUp2020 · 22/06/2021 15:12

Yes akso had this in two places after birth and lots of different canulas 🙄
They used a sort of gel (cant remember the name but was for bruising i think), they applied it with a gauze for 20min twice a day and i helped massively!

statetrooperstacey · 22/06/2021 15:16

Yes that looks pretty normal. I had a golfball sized swelling, I was barely able to pick the baby up because I had them in both hands. Also a loss of grip which took about a fortnight to properly come back. It’s awful isn’t it, seems to ache and hurt more as it heals weirdly !
Doesn’t seem fair on top of everything else you get your hands buggered up as well! 💐

It's arnica gel that helps bruises, I think you can get it tablets too.

Give it another week to settle before worrying.

I was in hospital last month for 9 days and they left my canula in the whole time even though it was only needed for the first night! The midwife on the last shift before I left couldn’t believe it had been left in and not changed the whole time. It is still slightly sore now almost a month later! X

Yes they can hurt like heck. I remember one time when I was pregnant with ds I had one put in the inside of my wrist and I swear it wasn't put in right as within about 5 / 10 mins of the drip starting I was writhing in agony and nearly fainted. They stopped it and it calmed down after about a half hour but felt bruised for days.

cantthinkofaname2021 · 24/06/2021 13:54

Yes I think that's the problem, it took a while to actually get it in my hand and hurt whenever they put anything in 😣 and was just left sort of flapping around for 30 hours, I kept asking to be removed but they were so busy they kept forgetting I think :( I probably knocked it a few times and injured the veins
It's much less bruised looking but still swollen & numb
