Too Many Scans?

Hello I was wondering if there is such a thing as too many scans?
I’m 29 weeks and had a 4D scan booked for a while for today, but at my 28 week scan I was told that I’ll have to have regular growth scans every 2 weeks until she’s born to see if she’s growing correctly, so that means there’s only 1 week and 1 day between the last scan I had and only 6 days between the next growth scan at 30 weeks so I’m a bit worried that 3 scans in 2 weeks is too much? Should I cancel the 4D scan? TIA!

I've had 9 scans in total I'm now 28 weeks I had a scan 2 scans 8 days between and it was all fine 😌

I think, like everything else, there will be a tiny (miniscule!) risk from scans but the benefits FAR outweigh any of that so don't overthink it.

Your 4D scan is a one off and the rest are for medical purposes. The cash strapped NHS wouldn't waste resources or use unsafe resources if they didn't think it was necessary.

I had weekly scans toward the end of my second pregnancy due to positioning and worries of complications after my first. #2 is 8 now and absolutely fine!

Whenever I see a sonographer they always tell me how often they quickly scanned themselves when they were pregnant because of the length of time between scans / lack of scans. I was initially worried about this too, did my research, spoke to experts and was much more relaxed. Ultrasound has been around for many years, any adverse affects from frequent scanning would be apparent by now. Hope that helps you relax OP!

I don’t think there’s such a thing. I had private maternity care and with baby 2 I was scanned at every appointment by my consultant as he preferred it to check baby rather than listening for the heartbeat with the Doppler. I didn’t actually keep tabs but I reckon I had about 10 in total. Baby now 4 months olds and all fine. I personally find 4D scans really creepy though, I had one with with my first without being asked (consultant just switched the machine to 4D thinking he was doing me a favour) and it was like looking at an alien. I certainly wouldn’t pay for it. Up to you though!

Thank you everyone! My partner and I were talking now after reading the responses too and I think we’re going to cancel! This 4D was to get better pictures as the last one they done was awful and didn’t get any good pictures of her! But maybe it’s not worth having one in between just to get better pictures and just stick to the growth scans! Thank you all I’ll wait until the next one in 6 days and just go NHS from now on ☺️

There was a point in my pregnancy where I had to have scans twice weekly, it’s perfectly safe OP, look at it as an extra opportunity to see your baby 😊

Yummymummy2020 · 19/06/2021 08:23

I had loads of scans particularly at the end in the time before being induced and baby is a year and a half now with no issues from it!!!

iminthegarden · 19/06/2021 08:34

Aren't they ultrasounds as opposed to scans?

Chelyanne · 19/06/2021 10:35

Very small risk to baby.
I had scans every 4 weeks after after an early scan with our twins then on the day of birth too (at least 9). Caused no harm to the babies but they were "medically nessesary". We didn't have any private scans with them but have with a couple of our others where I've had fewer NHS scans. I was thinking of getting a private growth scan for this one but my consultants have ordered me some now so no need to spend money on it.
I must admit the 4D scans are pretty special, we got a view of our little ones face at our gender scan at 16+4.

That’s what the scans are.... ultrasound scans
Oldraver · 19/06/2021 11:04

Another one who had more than once a week scans with both my 35 year old and 15 year old

I know many who were in the same boat and all is fine

sarah13xx · 19/06/2021 11:40

@iverunoutofinspiration 😂 I’d never thought of this but I bet they all do! Same with people who work in the maternity department, probably all nip in quickly for a check

iminthegarden · 20/06/2021 07:48

Ultrasounds are sonograms, they are very different to x-Ray or CT scans. There are no known risk from sound wave scans.

BellaBoo7 · 20/06/2021 18:39

I’m glad to find this I’m 9 weeks and had a scan at 7 weeks (private) and have booked another for this week (private) as I’m so anxious and 12 weeks seems so far away! I was worrying maybe I shouldn’t have so many but reading this I think I’m reassured that having the extra scans is perfectly safe and fine. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong x
