Hi everyone, I’ve very recently found out that I am pregnant, and whilst I am thrilled the horror has hit me.. I’m plus size, 5ft 8 and size 22-24.. I’m terrified that at my scans I’ll not be able to see much, and my bump 😭 of course I’ve googled and now I feel even more rubbish!!! Any plus size pregnant ladies on here? X

Hey, Congratulations! Don’t worry too much, scans may be a little less clear, especially early on, but as baby grows you’ll be able to see more. However, there comes a time (irrespective of your size) that baby is so big you can distinguish much anyway!

You’ll still be able to see you’ve got a bump, it may not be the perfect one we often see on slimmer women. For both my pregnancies I had a B bump, so a dent across it.

We can’t change how our bumps are, but do have control to have a healthy pregnancy. I sat this as being larger has additional risks, such as gestational diabetes. I had the test for both pregnancies, luckily I never developed it, but the liquid you have to drink and the waiting around was annoying.

Good luck and enjoy your pregnancy 🥰

Hi, I am 5’7 size 24 and equal stones Blush I was on a weight loss plan and fell pregnant albeit very early days and not 6 weeks yet and also haven’t lost any weight! I had a miscarriage in Nov 20 at 10 weeks and I am worried about it happening again.
As for scans your picture won’t be as clear as someone slimmer but I have scanned women who have had BMIs over 60, I won’t lie it was hard to scan and hurt my arm. But I have also scanned women who have bmis in the 50s and has what I wld say reasonable scan quality. It all depends on your body habits and tissue type and where the baby is laying. Sometimes slim people are harder to scan and have equally poor image quality. Sometimes at the 12 week scans if I can’t see I do a tv scan internal scan and you get clear images if the baby is in a good position.
Congratulations!

@ShinyBadger @Anuthanamechange hello ladies! Thank you for taking the time to comment on my post!

I suppose I’m just worried as I had a perfect bump with my daughter 6 years ago and would love another one, I know that the main thing is a healthy baby so I don’t even know why I’m letting this bug me so much?

@ShinyBadger I’m so sorry to hear about your miscarriage - I am wishing you a healthy pregnancy, I know it will be easier said than done but try your best not to worry..

My bmi is about 39/40 but I spoke to a dr this morning about folic acid as I asked for a prescription for the higher does as I’m overweight.. the dr said oh your actually in the obese bracket.. yep thanks for reminding me I’m fat!!

I’m feeling so sensitive and Ive only literally just found out im pregnant, can’t remember feeling like this the first time around, everything is making me worried and upset, I feel so pathetic! Xx

Hello! Hoping to get pregnant with number 3, I’m 5’5 and 99 kgs. In my first 2 pregnancies I was similar weight and have been so forever.

I actually lost weight with my first because I had a very easy job and no kids to feed, look after or take up my time. I walked everywhere, evening walks round the neighbourhood, at least 1 or 2 pregnancy workouts (YouTube) every day, craved salad and was terrified of getting GD so ate hardly any sweets (even though I knew that’s not how it works. If I got GD, I wanted to know it wasn’t because I was eating crap). Pregnancy 2 was equally fine, just less exercise so not as healthy. But fine.

Scan wise, I had one comment in my second pregnancy during a scan that sorry she was pushing so hard but it’s harder to see when there is fat in the way…. I mean, fair enough to be honest! Makes sense! Also someone had trouble finding a vein for taking blood because I had ‘deep veins’ ie covered in blubber 😁 but that’s the extent of it!

Good luck!

I am a plus size lady currently 27 + 5 weeks pregnant, I was very worried about my weight when I first found out I was pregnant and have suffered with weight/body image issues most of my life. The scans I've had only 1 of them had on my notes I was difficult to scan due to BMI but my other 2 have been perfectly clear and fine all depends where baby is lying. I also made sure to tell my midwife at booking that I didn't want to know my weight (as it could trigger my mental health problems around it) I have been happy to be weighed throughout but it's in my notes to tell me or talk about it.

I have a definite bump now too.. it is B shaped some days more than other again depends on where baby is lying. X

Baker0104 · 20/06/2021 01:00

Congratulations firstly!

I'm 35 weeks with my first baby, booking bmi was 43 so defo in the overweight camp.
However I've got a lovely bump, good blood pressure, good iron levels and haven't developed GD despite both my parents having type 2 diabetes! I took a higher dose of folic acid which I had to get on prescription and I was put on low dose daily aspirin from 12 weeks (not everyone does though)
Baby has had a few reduced movements episodes but that's partly because she was a bit small (catching up now though!) and I've got an anterior placenta that cushions everything!

Scan wise has been fine, the 12 week one ended up being half internal as they couldn't get a clear picture for one of the measurements but that was fine. My 20 week scan got redone 2 weeks later but apparently that happens a lot with slimmer women as well. The sonographer was really lovely and explained that some women just absorb the sound waves really well and she finds the worse women to scan because of that are marathon runners!

I've had a bit of a battle with "hospital policy" on things like water birth but I've requested a chat with the consultant midwife at the hospital who can override all that BS. The midwives have been great and never made me feel crappy etc... Just the middle management rubbish 🙄

All in all I've been happy with most things and I'm not worried. Trust your body and you'll be fine ☺️ xx

I am plus size and was around 16 and half stone at booking appt, my bmi is 37.5 but even with being classed as "obese" my pregnancy is still low risk, my 12 week scan was fine got perfect images and i carry all my extra weight in my lower stomach, im now 37 weeks and patiently waiting on baby making his big entrance, this is my most recent bump pic. Good luck in your pregnancy 💞

Gettingbiggerandbigger · 20/06/2021 03:06

Congratulations

You may be surprised. I was overweight before all my pregnancies and I lost weight during all of them, I was lighter at full term with each one than I was at conception.

I had a couple of unclear scans but things were much better when I went back for a 2nd one each time.

CustardyCreams · 20/06/2021 06:05

Hello just to say, I also gained no weight during pregnancy (previous bmi about 29) - I shed almost 2 stone after the birth. If you carefully calorie count you can do it. Good luck and congratulations!

Ttcbn2 · 20/06/2021 07:10

@Terrazzo @CobleCloud @Baker0104 @Homeiswheremyheartis @Gettingbiggerandbigger @CustardyCreams can I just say thank you to you all! You really have made me feel so much better. Thank you all for sharing your stories!

Good luck with all of your pregnancies!

@homeiswheremyheartis can I just say what a beautiful bump!! Xx

I don’t even know why I’m stressing about what my bump will look like.. as long as baby is healthy it doesn’t matter.. but I think it’s because we usually see these super perfect bumps and that’s what everyone expects..

With my first I had extreme morning sickness and lost 3st.. I mean I could really do with loosing that again but couldn’t cope with the sickness, medication and constant hospital admissions again 🤮😂 xx

Best to get advice as how to reduce too much weight gain in pregnancy, doc or midwife will advise.
Try and relax and enjoy pregnancy

thingymaboob · 20/06/2021 10:02

Hiya ladies. My booking BMI will be close to 35. My last pregnancy booking was 29 so I'm definitely bigger this time round. Feel really worried. I've got horrendous sickness at the moment which is being kept at bay by bread! Hope you're all ok!

KHR1 · 20/06/2021 12:05

Hi, congratulations!
I'm 29+4 with DC2 and have had a high bmi both times. Last time it was 37 a booking, I used to get notes on my scans about maternal habitus but they always got the images they needed. This time my BMI is 40 and the images have been clearer than last time. My bump was pretty obvious quite early despite me carrying a lot of my weight on my belly - it isn't a super neat round bump but I've got over that!

Hope all goes well for you!

Sunflowerx · 20/06/2021 12:09

I'm the same clothes size and height as you and currently 24 weeks into my first pregnancy!

My weight has never really been highlighted other than being told I'd need to take 150mg aspirin and 'restricted view due to maternal habitus' on my scan notes but all the scans I've had I've clearly been able to make out my baby girl!

I'm so excited to be a mum and not letting my fatness get in the way of that 😂

Ttcbn2 · 20/06/2021 13:18

Thank you so much ladies for taking the time to write on my post.

I certainly feel much more relaxed now! Xx

@Rachy11 I was also put on higher dose folic acid and they told me to continue taking my pregnacare as well ☺️
pixiedust21 · 13/08/2021 22:10

@Rachy11 I was advised to take a high dose of vitamin d alongside the folic acid which I have continued doing :)

My BMI was 39 at booking in and I was so worried - googled all the things that I'd be high risk for and all sorts. Was also really worried if not get a proper bump.

My experience so far (I am 29 weeks) - blood pressure has remained normal, no issues. Had to be referred for consultant appt but just went through some potential risks and checked if I was high risk for clots (I wasn't). Midwives and staff have always been nothing but professional and kind. Other than BMI I am low risk in other ways. Had to have glucose tolerance test at 26 weeks - also fine.

And here's my bump xx
