Discovered I was pregnant over the weekend. Was a bit of a suprise and miracle pregnancy between ivf rounds. We aren't sure how far along I am due to my cycles being all messed up by the ivf. I have a scan booked at the clinic on Monday to see how far along I am and the viability of it. We think I'm about 6-7 weeks as my hcg was 29000 and what I thought was my period was actually implantation bleeding.

We are planning to go private probably from 12 weeks.

Should we still register with the local hospital or should I just leave it and if I should when?

I'm thinking maybe after my scan on Monday when I actually know how far along I am?

I terrified I would curse my pregnancy by telling anyone so put off calling the GP until 9 weeks. This was a mistake because they need to take some bloods at your "booking in appointment" before 10 weeks to run some tests.

I did self referral at 6wk after weekly tests were still showing strong positives.

If you're going with private care it may be best to go to the GP and ask them how they handle private with local care.

For DC1, I just went private.

For DC2, I self-referred to the local NHS midwives around 8/9 weeks, as we'd moved and my private consultant (booked at 5 weeks, as they get busy!) was based in London (an hour drive), so I wanted a combination of care... 1) in case I went into labour at home and couldn't get to London hospital and 2) I wanted to make sure that I was in the NHS system for the local HV checks after birth.

I did the scheduled NHS midwives checks near my house and then also monthly appts with scans with my consultant in London (a nice plus as he had the machine in his consulting room). I had separate maternity notes for each, as they run their own tests etc.

If I have another baby, I'll probably skip the private consultant appointments and just stick with NHS antenatal care and then go private from 36 weeks, so just before birth (this would need to be booked in quite early though, as my consultant only takes 8 private patients per month)
