Really scared... 6 weeks pregnant

Hi all,

I'm 6 weeks pregnant and the other day my husband cooked noodles and put oxygen absorber in the food. The small packet they keep in the dried noodles to keep it absorbed. He thought it was the seasoning, I felt weird eating it but didn't think anything was bad.

It is actually iron oxide from what I looked at through research. I'm extremely scared if this will cause anything bad for the developing fetus.

I ate the noodles 3 days ago and I had my hcg test done yesterday and the level came 71000 so it is a good number. I didn't have any symptoms other than the poop being really black (usually what happens when you eat a lot of iron).

I'm really worried if the excess iron consumption will mess up anything for me. I had a miscarriage back in January and this one I hope is a rainbow baby.

I spoke to the nurse and she said for an adult it is not gone do any harm as it will process it but for fetus they don't know.

I'm contemplating if I should have an abortion and try again. Just scared if this will cause deformities to the baby.

Really worried any help is appreciated.

Hi, don’t be worried. You are fine in yourself and your blood results were too. If anything was wrong with the baby you would have been experiencing and showing some nasty symptoms. Your baby is fine so don’t worry.

Bells3032 · 16/06/2021 08:46

I seriously doubt that there has been any damage. Lots of women are given iron in pregnancy and it doesn't do the baby any harm.

I am slightly concerned your reaction is abort and try again rather than wait and see given the unlikelihood of any issues. Do you really want this baby op or are you trying to find a reason not to have it?

I want this baby but I'm scared what if this will have any long term affect such as Down syndrome. I'm being extremely anxious regarding it.

Thank you so much for your response. I have lost my mind after my last miscarriage and can't help with the anxiety.

@daddydas i understand. i am at a similar point as you with a shock in between ivf pregnancies (literally i had the IVF whilst unknowingly pregnant). I only just discovered at 6 weeks and obv during that time i had a drink, had my hair highlighted and I had the ivf drugs and i am terrified.

Have you considered speaking to a councillor. there are specialist who deal with this kind of anxiety.

Hopefully it'll be a nice, strong, sticky baby. fingers crossed for you OP

PS Downs syndrome can't be caused by iron...it's genetic

Hey thanks a lot. I'm just overly anxious and scared. The thought of another miscarriage is just making me crazy. I have a 7 weeks ultrasound next week and that's when things went south last time. Please pray for me :)

Downs Syndrome is caused by abnormal cell division, it happens at conception.

daddydas · 16/06/2021 15:29

@Bells3032 hope everything goes well with both of us :). Sending prayers and love. It's just seems like a mission to be a mother.

Thanks @shivawn hopefully nothing like that happened. My husband was on an anti biotic when we conceived. Hopefully everything was fine.

@daddydas how old are you btw. bear in mind the biggest risk factor for downs is age. anything like antibiotics or any external factors have no impact

daddydas · 16/06/2021 15:39

Hello @Bells3032 I'm 32 and hubby is 33. We are together for last 2 years. Hopefully we are not an age that DS is a high likelihood.

Bells3032 · 16/06/2021 15:40

DS is more likely over 40. you are v young (same age as me!) so your risk is extremely low. Is there any particular reason you're so worried about Downs? is there any genetic reason

justwant2beamum · 16/06/2021 15:40

I can't believe a 33 yo man thought the sachet was seasoning...

@Bells3032 no particular reasons why and no history of down syndrome in the family on both sides but just a worry after the miscarriage as my mind is playing games with me.

@justwant2beamum I know trust me he is very sorry and guilty for it.

I appreciate you are anxious but you must know that it's not logical to think it could cause Down syndrome. It's caused at conception, not because of anything people eat.

If you are this anxious at this stage, it's worthwhile considering being referred to mental health services for help, they are very sympathetic and can really help you.

sophi1995 · 16/06/2021 16:06

You do seem extremely anxious OP, I can just imagine how exhausting this level of anxiety must be for you. I think wanting to abort and try again is a very extreme reaction to this. We all roll the dice when we have children, you just need to hope for the best and trust the odds are they will be healthy.

daddydas · 16/06/2021 16:10

@Tinselandlights I think my ability to think logically has gone bad now, but this forum is very helpful. Thanks for all the concerns

@sophi1995 I have lost my ability to think logically. I think I'm just desperate to have a baby now and will to do anything for it.

Hey of course I will. Just be calm and keep healthy - you and baby will be just fine.
