Low PAPP-A rant

Just curious if anyone is taking aspirin for low PAPP-A and what dose you are on?

I have always had really low blood pressure and have found that the aspirin just constantly makes me dizzy, especially after meals. I'm on 150mg daily, which I think is quite high, but when I've asked the midwives about it they say to just keep taking it.
Just a bit miffed that low blood pressure is not seen as a problem the way high blood pressure is, it is affecting my quality of life, making it difficult to concentrate at work, walk etc.
The implication is that any mother would make any sacrifice for their child, and of course I would! But I'm a person too, you know?
Rant over!

I have low Papp-a too but wasn’t told to take aspirin -though that was apparently a mistake by my midwife and I should have been on it (she told me this)- though luckily in my case it seemingly wasn’t needed as my baby has measured above average on the growth scans.

It does seem from reading previous threads that some trusts don’t have all low Papp-a cases on aspirin. I’m not telling you not to take it but I would try ask them what it’s doing in your case since what are you gaining from it given you if you already have low blood pressure. Surely you’re at risk of fainting etc which isn’t going to be good for you or baby.

I changed trusts half way through my second pregnancy. I’ve been prescribed aspirin during both pregnancies. 75mg from trust 1 which I took through my first pregnancy and the first half of my second pregnancy and 150mg by trust 2 - I’ve just carried on taking the original 75mg! Had a 7lb 11oz baby at 41 weeks first time and have my first growth scan for baby number 2 in a couple of weeks.
How far along are you? I have low blood pressure all the time and tend to hover around 100/60 in pregnancy. I hadn’t thought about the aspirin having an effect. I definitely struggle with the effects of low blood pressure more in the first half - I haven’t had to suddenly sit on the floor for a few weeks now!

Thank you!
I'm 31 weeks and having additional scans for growth, so far the baby is on the low end of the normal range, I have another scan of Friday, so will see.
I've also had awful acid reflux, like never before in my life, which is also down to aspirin, I recon.
Going to see if I'm ok going down to 75mg

I take aspirin for low papp-a. I was told to take 150mg so that's what I've been taking for the last 13 weeks x

I had low blood pressure in both pregnancies, second trimester each time, but not low papp-a.. could it be unrelated?

jessicakxx · 15/06/2021 13:59

I have low Papp-a, was told at 12 weeks. I'm now 22+4 and I've never been told to take aspirin and when I checked with midwife she told me they don't prescribe it for Papp-a.

My 20 week scan showed baby measuring right size so that is amazing and my first consultant app is Monday, I have just been switched to consultant care and had my monthly scans booked in, but no aspirin. Think it depends on trusts x

I’ve just been prescribed aspirin for low Pap a and I have three extra scans and 2 consultant appointments already booked in. Have never even heard of it before this week. Does seem different from trust to trust by what I have read in different threads. I think my aspirin is 75mg but it hasn’t arrived yet so I don’t know if I take one or two!

FakeTanandProsecco · 16/06/2021 14:48

The acid reflux will be down to the pregnancy in general, not the aspirin. You can get a prescription for gaviscon/ buy it OTC. If they don't help gp may be willing to prescribe something else for it.

All medication in pregnancy is based on the balance of risk Vs benefits. If you don't think the risk or side effects of the Aspirin are worth it then stop taking it. But it's up to you to decide that. Noone can force you to take Aspirin!

Keep your fluid intake up, as this can help with low blood pressure.

I have low Papp-a but was never advised, I only found out because they accidentally sent a letter to me instead of my gp from the hospital, my midwife doesn't have a clue and she's not the best if I'm honest so I took it upon myself and phoned emergency gynaecology in 2 different hospitals and spoke to 2 consultants and both advised me to take 150mg of aspirin per day but I wouldn't have know this if I hadn't looked into it.

I'm booked in for 5 extra growth scans due to this

I have low blood pressure but it doesn't affect me like yours

If your not sure I would always ring around yourself, call a different hospital for a second opinion too and explain how your feeling, never feel like your bothering them either
