Covid Vaccine in Pregnancy

Hi all, apologies in advance if this topic has already been addressed. First time poster here. I'm currently 29/40 pregnant. Fit and healthy. I have asthma but this is very well controlled. Healthy pregnancy, only concern is low lying placenta. Previous PPH so under an Obstetrician but I don't see her for another few weeks yet. I'd be very grateful to hear from any medics out there (doctors... Midwives etc) regarding getting the covid vaccine. I understand the guidance has changed and the vaccine is now being recommended. I've been undecided and was hoping to wait until my baby is born before having the vaccine but as the rates are increasing, particularly with the Delta Variant, I'm now becoming increasingly anxious about whether I should arrange to have the vaccine while pregnant. I spoke to my Midwife but unfortunately she was unable to offer any advice (said she was unsure of the evidence herself) so I have been doing my own research via the RCOG. I'd love to hear about other people's experiences, and particularly any medically trained professionals who can shed some advice. Many thanks x

Not this again. There are about 10 threads on this. I am 25 weeks, had two vaccines all fine. The recommendation is to have the vaccine as third trimester covid can lead to premature birth and still birth.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/06/2021 07:34

I've had both and I'm in very early pregnancy. Just get the vaccine!

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2021 07:34

Well that's a kind reply!

You could have easily written this without adding in the first two sentences Hmm I'm constantly shocked at the lack of manners/sympathy on MN.

I had my first one at 34 weeks op, what made me choose to go ahead was the risks of being hospitalised if you get covid in third trimester

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 15/06/2021 07:45

There have been multiple threads on the same topic every day lately, if the OP has read the RCOG what more can I add other my own opinion?!

marplemead · 15/06/2021 07:46

I had my first dose of the Pfizer at 20wks with no side effects other than a sore arm. I'll be getting my 2nd dose at 28wks. I didn't do much research other than to read about the risks of catching covid in the 3rd trimester. Like PP has said, a significant increase in premature birth and stillbirth.
Is there anything in particular you are worried about?

StealthPolarBear · 15/06/2021 07:47

I was actually talking about the first reply but looks like you're equally irritated. No requirement to reply to any post that annoys you.

I’m 25w and have made my own risk assessment not to have it on the basis that whilst evidence suggests it’s fine in terms of live births with no obvious developmental deformities, the vaccine simply hasn’t been around long enough to assess any developmental issues which present themselves when child is over a year old

It’s all about your own risk- I work from home, and will continue to, insist my friends (and me and DH) all do lateral flow tests before meeting up in small groups, and overall I am very careful, so for me the risk of catching covid is in my mind quite low. DH had his on Sunday and has had awful side effects including muscle spasms…. He told me that he would be nervous about me having it based on that alone (neither of us are medically qualified)

I know most disagree with me though

Cafeaulait27 · 15/06/2021 07:56

I had my first dose at 20 weeks, second one will be at 31 weeks. Baby is fine. I understand your worries - I was nervous due to previous miscarriages but the risk of still birth if I got covid scared me more. And I wanted to enjoy my pregnancy and spend time with friends/enjoy my freedom this summer!

My advice would be to get it! Also a good video to watch is the ‘pregnant then screwed covid vaccine’ webinar on YouTube. If you type it in it’ll come up xx

Thank you to those who have taken the time to respond politely and with genuine advice. To those of you who feel the need to post rude and hurtful comments, why bother? I thought this was a 'safe' place to ask opinions and share experiences. How wrong could I have been. Shocked and disgusted at some of the comments. I'll be leaving mumsnet - what a horrible and unwelcoming forum.

Sometimes people just want to chat about an issue they're dealing with. They don't want to read pages and pages of past threads, they want someone to engage with them.
#bekind was everywhere a year or so ago. It irritated me because it was just a slogan and has no bearing on what actually goes on.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 15/06/2021 09:16

It depends on the vaccine type as well, it’s not as simple as ‘just get it’. I had my first dose of AZ vaccine before I was pregnant and have decided to postpone the second dose until after the baby is born, on the advice of my doctor. As AZ hasn’t been recommended for pregnant women yet he said if you are low risk anyway and work from home perhaps postpone it, but if you are higher risk and work in e.g healthcare then that tips the balance in favour of having it. If I’d had Pfizer or Moderna as first dose I would have got it as those have been recommend for pregnant women. Not ideal and wish I was able to get it 🤷‍♀️
