Worried I'm not eating enough

I'm currently 9 weeks and have been struggling with morning sickness for the last few weeks, as a result I feel like I've not been eating enough as I just can't stomach it. Things I used to eat/drink I cant touch anymore and it's a struggle to keep some stuff down. I'm almost living off ginger nut biscuits and toast at the minute. I have also lost a little weight too which also has me worried. I'm a bigger girl anyway so I know I have some reserves but I don't want to do anything to put baby at risk! Please help!

Thankfully I didn't have morning sickness at all, but my midwife was clear that it's not unusual for it to ruin your appetite, and as long as you're eating and keeping things down, a small amount of weight loss is okay in the first trimester, and you'll "catch up" in the second one.

I'm 13 weeks now and haven't gained anything, despite no morning sickness.

I hope you feel better soon Flowers

I lost a shed load of weight initially that I could I’ll afford to as already very underweight

Then got through sickness and gained weight gradually and healthily

Both babies higher than average birth weight

Don't worry about it too much, do try to take a multivitamin and contact your GP. They may be able to offer you medication to calm it down so you can get in some good nutrition.
The 1st trimester can be pretty brutal on the healthy eating front, you just have to eat what you can and hope it eases off sooner rather than later.

I had 24 hr sickness for the first 4 months or so. Lived more or less off dry rice crispies. Occasionally I could get a bit of a ready meal down (I couldn't cope with cooking smells so a quick blast in the microwave was just about manageable at times. Ds is now a strapping 19yo, who towers over me, so don't worry too much.

IF it is really bad, please speak to your GP about possible medication. I did this with my second and the difference was amazing.

I lost a dangerous amount of weight during my first trimester due to constant sickness.

I had a brilliant midwife who reassured me that babies were wonderful parasites - they will get all they need from you, but leave you far worse off for it.

Eat what ever you can. Hopefully it will ease later on. If you can't stomach the multi vitamin you can just take vitamin d and folic acid in separate small pills (way more gentle on the stomach)

Hi lovely.
I was the same as yourself for the first 16 weeks of my pregnancy. Couldn’t eat anything, had constant nausea and food aversions to almost everything I enjoyed. I lived off slush puppies and ice poles for so long and some days managed cereal, toast or a little plain pasta. I lost about a stone over this time but at no point were the midwives concerned and they assured me baby would be getting everything he needed.
I’m now 39 weeks and other than baby measuring a bit small, all has been fine. He’s expected to be about 7.2lbs.

Make sure you’re taking your pregnancy vitamins 💕

Oh, same, @PriscillaQueenOfDessert I lost weight during the first few weeks of each pregnancy. As a pp said, the baby will take what it needs so it will be fine.
It's miserable though, isn't it? When I was expecting there was nothing that could be done (post thalidomide) but I believe there are safer medications now. Try to find yourself a nice understanding GP, because you are important and not just your baby.
Congratulations on your pregnancy and commiserations on the sickness. I remember it oh, so well! All I can say is, it will pass hopefully sooner rather than later, and your beautiful baby will be worth it!

I gained very little weight during 2nd pregnancy and the baby was born at a very average weight of 7.5 lb.
I think they are good at taking the nutrients they need.

Oh, one tip! My sickness was relentless first thing and I would retch whether or not I had anything to bring up. Sips of water as I was going made it more tolerable as there was something other than whatever it is you bring up when your stomach is empty 🤢
And then there is sometimes a sweet spot/respite where it is possible to keep something down for long enough for some nourishment to stick.
If there isn't, you really must talk to someone (and don't let them fob you off like some older doctors do especially males )

PriscillaQueenOfDessert · 14/06/2021 16:42

Thanks everyone. I'm going to speak to my GP about anti sickness meds if it carries on. I'm just eating what I can when I can and hopefully that's enough for now ☺️
