Baby measuring small 28 weeks

Hello, I’ve just come back from my 28 week scan/check up and was told by the consultant my baby is measuring on the smaller side, the lady that did my scan said everything was okay, that the blood flow was normal over the cord, the measurements looked good? But then the consultant told me she’s measuring 2.2 pounds and for my weight/BMI that’s 36 and my height that’s 5’3 baby should be bigger?
They want me back in 2 weeks to have another growth scan but I’m so worried now, she’s given me all these leaflets on having a small baby and everything, I was wondering did anyone else have a baby measuring on the smaller side at 28 weeks and everything was okay?
Thanks.

It says she’s on the 10th percentile? I’m just really worried as I didn’t really get many answers today about why she’s a small baby? And if the lady who was scanning me said everything is fine and she has no concerns at all? That the flow was fine, my blood pressure is fine too? And at my 20 week scan no abnormalities were found? I do eat a lot of crap food because still now it’s the only thing I can stomach, so I really don’t know why she’s measuring small at all? Any one been in this position? Please I’m just really worried now.

She just might be a small baby...they will just make sure she continues to follow her percentile and doesn't drop

Ahh thank you, I really hope so!

My first was over a week late and on the 3rd centile and we had no issues with her.
I was very sick with her and didn't eat much although I don't know if that contributed to the small weight. I thought babies usually take what they need and leave the mothers without.

Yes. My son was estimated to weigh only about 1.5lbs at this stage. I think the estimate was off. Anyway, he was born at 39 weeks, a tiny-but-healthy 5lb 11oz. No issues at all; he was just small. I was a small baby too.

I was measuring similar - still only on the 18th percentile. My bmi is same as yours and apparently they do growth charts based on your weight/height. So baby might be average for their age but as I'm heavier they think I should have a bigger baby?! My placenta is also at the front so they can't get proper measurements unless I have a scan. I'm sure they will keep an eye on you and check every few weeks :)

My 12 week old was small - I was on extra growth scans as my first was also low birth weight.

I had growth scans from 26 weeks, every 2 weeks. They just tracked his growth and checked the blood flow through the cord and placenta. He was slowly tailing off his line and growth was slowing down, so he was born at 37 weeks weighing 5.1lb. He was quite jaundice (never needed the lamps), he struggled to maintain his temperature too, and he struggled with breastfeeding (I’d pretty much chosen to exclusively pump anyway so this wasn’t a major problem for me)

Other than that, he is thriving and healthy, and now following the 2nd centile - he is diddy!

Sometimes some people just carry small babies. Doesn't mean anything is wrong but I can understand why you'd be worried. I would be too.

My sister gave birth at 36 weeks and my niece was around 5lb. Perfectly healthy. Just small. She is being monitored this time around because my niece was small. I think she just carries small babies.

PixieDust28 · 11/06/2021 21:47

Forgot to add my son was born at 38+3 at 7lb 2oz. So not small but not big but he's a diddy. We're both small so he is just a little diddy ☺️.

The way it was explained to me which helped me not to worry so much is, take a look around. People are all shapes and sizes and so are babies.

10th centile isn't that small either, my baby boy stopped growing and wasn't even on the chart, now 9th centile at 11 months old.

HotPotatoHotPotato21 · 11/06/2021 21:58

My son was 15 days overdue and 7lbs 2.5oz. Although the weight doesn't sound low, as he was so overdue that put him on the 4th centile for his gestational age. He was absolutely fine and even lost 11% weight in the first week but it didn't cause any problems.
I'm on baby number two now and consultant led due to my son's size. It's good your blood flow looks normal, I've been checked this time round and they've found I have a notch so I am seeing the midwife every two weeks as high risk for preeclampsia due to the blood flow. I've been told if baby is looking too small, they will induce early. It's good they are keeping an eye on you, you may just carry little babies! 1 in 10 babies will be 10th centile or lower so I wouldn't worry.

My BMI is around 39 and both my boys were considered to be lower than. 9th centile for my height (5 foot 8) and weight. In reality they were 6lbs 11 and 6lbs 15. They just expected them to be bigger because I'm fat.

Sceptre86 · 13/06/2021 07:24

Peoples weight goes up and down so it is ridiculous to think a fatter person will have a bigger baby. Look at Kate Middleton she is incredibly thin but still has babies that weight over 8lb as do many models. What we eat though is incredibly important for a baby's development, so if you can stomach them plenty of eggs, fish, lentils , pulses, fruit and vegetables will help baby put on weight as well as having plenty of dairy. My first child was a dd and born small at 5lb 10oz because my placenta failed and she stopped growing. I have had to have extra scans in my next pregnancy because of this. Ds was 8lb 10oz and I was hungrier with him (not sure why) , I made a conscious choice to eat more of the above foods and I think that may have helped but he was born at 40 weeks and I had a healthy placenta that time around so who knows?

This time around I have growth scans starting in two weeks and I think this baby ( dd2) will be average sized and somewhere in the middle. I have low iron levels which I am trying to raise as that can lead to low birthweight babies.

Try not to worry so much and enjoy the extra scans. x

My friend had fortnightly scans to monitor the growth of her first baby as she was measuring so small. Between the 3rd and 8th percentile if I remember correctly. She was induced at 38w and had a 6lb+ baby. She’s pregnant again and doesn’t need the regular scans because this baby is measuring fine.

Try not to worry if everything else is fine. Smile
