Do I know the sex now??

Hello!

I'm 29 weeks, decided not to find out the sex. I was at the hospital today for reduced movements(everything was fine in the end). The midwife that saw me kept saying 'she'. I didn't have a scan so she couldn't of seen anything and I'm not sure whether they put it on notes or not? Is there a possibility she has seen it on my notes maybe or do you think she was just saying 'she' instead of having to call the baby 'it'?

I've seen people say a few times that no medical professional ever writes down the sex of a baby anywhere so maybe just their preferred way of referring to baby albeit not great for you...

Bluey18 · 10/06/2021 16:49

Midwives often switch between "he" and "she" and after seeing one get an absolute bollocking from a patient for referring to her baby as "it" I can understand why... I honestly wouldn't give it a second thought OP. They called my baby she when I was hospitalised recently, I know he's a he.

PotteringAlong · 10/06/2021 16:51

Yes, it’s just instead of it. The sex of your baby isn’t recorded as it has no medical relevance.

eandz13 · 10/06/2021 16:57

If I haven't seen/been told baby's gender I automatically refer to them as 'they' (I work in the field). I suppose 'she' could be automatic for somebody else though? I see how it could be. I think it's safe to say you still don't really know 🤷🏻‍♀️

GreyhoundG1rl · 10/06/2021 16:58

They used to use "he" as the default, until people took umbrage... They can't bloody win!

AzraiL · 10/06/2021 17:00

I think it was to avoid calling the baby 'it'.

Side note, for some reason I read the title of this thread and automatically imagined someone who spoke English as a second language asking this right after dtd for the first time.

Moonshine11 · 10/06/2021 17:01

It’s not wrote down op.
When I went in to have my DS midwife asked what I was having/if I knew

Danxoie · 10/06/2021 17:16

Thanks for everyone's replies. I really dont mind anyway, the surprise is more added bonus at the end for us, at the time I was more bothered about baby just being okay. The only reason I asked was because wasn't sure whether to tell my partner baby was a girl haha!

Thanks again.

@Danxoie Definitely not written down 😊 most midwives etc naturally say either he or she. I had both throughout my pregnancy 😊

I was 100% convinced I was having a boy from the minute I saw the positive test. Wanted it kept a surprise until birth. Went for a private scan at 30 weeks so DH could finally see baby (during covid) and she flashed all the details up on the screen - all my details then baby’s position, gestation etc and at the end it said “Sex-Female”. I was fuming because I’d specifically said I didn’t want to know. But also SO confused because I just KNEW I was having a boy 🙈🤣🤣

Turns out he was indeed a boy 🤷🏻‍♀️ No idea what the private scan was all about unless it was my sex but that seems weird 🤣

@KM38 wow that's amazing!! And your gut instinct was right too!!!🥰

I was convinced I'd seen boys parts at my 30 week scan and thought I'd ruined it for myself but I definitely didn't because I had DD 10 weeks later! God knows what I was looking at

Sex - female, that would have been YOUR sex 😂.

As men often have ultrasounds for various reasons too, lots of people get confused by this.

My friend done this! She thought her DD leg was a penis 😂

@bubblebath62636 🤣 I know that lol. Had it been an NHS scan, I wouldn’t even have questioned it because I’d expect them to have lots of male patients too. But it was specifically in a private maternity scan facility and was listed at the end of the section all about the baby’s position, placenta position etc 🤣
