Itchy feet and hands in pregnancy

I’m 26 weeks pregnant and I’ve had intense itchy feet and hands at night time for the last two nights and mild-ish during the day.

I understand this may be due to cholestasis for which i have just returned from giving blood for from the hospital. Should have my results by the end of today.

I was told it could be due to pregnancy hormones/heat.

My questions are, have you experienced this and it just turned out to be well itchy hands and feet? If so when did it start & go away?

If it turned out to be cholestasis - what happened?

Thank you in advance!

Hey, I had this, all over. I was red raw and bleeding how much I was scratching!
It wasn’t cholestasis for me but I got prescribed a cream from GP and it helped 100%, I was so happy to sleep well on a night 😂

Ah thank you! That sounds promising that it can just be hormones or weather. Hopefully it’s the case for me too!

Hope you’re better now

Hey, I had bloods taken for the same yesterday. Waiting on results. I’m 38+4 weeks. Really hoping it’s just the heat. I’m itchy all over but mostly my feet/ankles and hands. It’s unbelievable at night but this could be down to me just lying there and noticing it more, whereas during the day I’m busy doing other things… sometimes 😂

My midwife has said if it is Cholestasis they will look at the levels. If it’s too high, I’ll be induced now. But if it’s just a little higher, I’ll be monitored more closely for these last couple of weeks.

Hopefully we both get the good news and it’s just the heat or allergies. I’m going to ask when they phone if I can possibly be prescribed an antihistamine to help with the itching. I’ve found a nice luke warm bath and Aveeno moisturiser helps, at least a little.

It goes away once baby is born.

It is a risk to baby not mum.

Keep a very close eye on babies movements if you are positive.

It nearly ended badly for us due to a bitch of a midwife.

I was diagnosed with choleostasis at 37 weeks pregnant. I am 44 and it is my first child.

I was given hormones for induction straightaway, but after 48 hours nothing had happened, so I had a c-section.

The itching was absolutely awful. But went away immediately after baby was born!!

@Normando91 gosh, let me know when you get your results.

I called at 5pm and they gave me my liver results which came back fine but were still waiting on bile results. I called back now and my bile results are slightly raised which I indicates that I have it. I’ve been asked to keep an eye on baby’s movements and to come in for further tests and to discuss how to manage the condition with the dr.

I feel like crying, I had my son last year at 18 weeks who died neo natally, in this pregnancy my cervix has shortened so ive needed at stitch which I had three weeks ago. After that I thought great, things are looking up. Just feeling so down at the moment that I might lose this baby. Her movements have already softened, whereas two weeks ago I could feel her hard kicks.

I’m only 26 weeks which is early for this condition- even the midwife who took my bloods today
Said that.

@SunshineCake I’m sorry to hear that, that must still be so traumatic for you. I will definitely keep an eye on her movements. So far every time I’ve had a suspicion about something it’s been right.

@Happymama77 sorry to hear you’ve been through this too. Glad things were ok for you and that it went away! I am definitely less worried about the itching and more about losing another baby. I can’t go through that again.

I know diet can help so I will get on that ASAP.

I can’t wait for tomorrow and to hear the baby is ok, I feel like moving into the bloody hospital.

Hi OP, if it helps I had obstetric cholestasis in my last pregnancy. It started at 24 weeks (twin pregnancy though). They managed it with a drug called urso (shortened name!) but apart from the miserable itching there were no ill effects on the babies. They were delivered prematurely at 34 weeks but that was due to a complete placental abruption and nothing to do with the OC. They would have wanted to induce at 37 weeks if that hadn't happened - apathy the OC is only really a risk to baby once you get close to 40 weeks.

miltonj · 11/06/2021 05:36

Yep I had this, but all the way through pregnancy not just towards the end. I wasn't diagnosed with anything. It actually stayed for the first few months of breast feeding, oh they were so so itchy. I'm getting itchy now thinking about it, hope it turns out to be nothing op x

tuxedocat · 11/06/2021 17:39

I had OC, there should be no impact on baby but it’s certainly no fun for you! They will Likely have weekly blood tests and keep an eye on your levels, and manage it with Urso. It sounds horrible but if they catch it, they can manage it well.
