Just wondering what actually happens- mine is very soon. I know they talk to you about birth plans, family history etc but in terms of tests etc, is it just bloods and urine and BMI etc, rather than taking pregnancy tests to confirm you’re pregnant (I know I am, it would just be nice to hear from a professional) and a scan??

Exactly what you said - lots of paperwork, questions, bloods and urine. No pregnancy test and no scan. Home pregnancy tests are so accurate these days, they don't bother 🙂 it feels like it should be more exciting with it being your first appt but it's actually rather boring!

Mseddy · 10/06/2021 12:14

You don't get a scan until 12 weeks with the NHS

Chelyanne · 10/06/2021 12:19

Birth plans tend to be discussed once you get to the 3rd trimester.
Booking is often split in 2 atm. I had bloods, urine dip/sent off, weight/height in person. History was via phone 6 days later, they had most stuff on their digital records so more of an update and not too long.
The midwife will refer you for a scan at your booking app, depends on demand in your area as to how long the wait is (mine was 3wk wait).

Lockdownmummy · 10/06/2021 12:21

My pre Covid booking appt was lots of questions/paperwork on medical history etc. urine and blood pressure with community mid wife. Didn't have bloods until 12 week scan at the hospital.

Covid booking appt was over the phone so just the questions! Then bloods again at 12 week scan.

India999 · 10/06/2021 12:27

My most recent pregnancy - booking appt was over the phone, literally just medical history etc. Then blood tests at hospital two days later. Then nothing until 12 weeks scan.

expectinglittlebear · 10/06/2021 12:32

I am 6+4 and have just been told that my booking appt is on 24th June (when I will be 8+4).. and it is over the phone?

I am a bit concerned as I thought they do urine tests, blood tests (for sickle and thalassemia) etc etc. But no mention of them?

Any one else had the same thing?

@India999 when you had yours on the phone, did you know about the hospital appt beforehand, or told on the call? I haven't heard a thing in regards to a physical appt / tests! x

@mummatosquish Your dating (first) scan is usually 12 wks on the NHS.

However, there is a option to pay for a private scan. I am doing an early scan next week, when I will be just under 8 weeks. I think the place I am going to can do an early scan from 6 wks - 12wks.

My booking appt was at 7 weeks. I had an appointment at the maternity unit when they took urine and blood samples, and calculated my BMI.

Then I had a phone call where they went through my medical history and did a risk assessment.

Then first scan is at 12 weeks, with more bloods. First midwife appointment is around 16 weeks, and you might get to hear the heartbeat for the first time with a Doppler.

That’s as far as I know Grin congratulations!

NinaMimi · 10/06/2021 13:18

Family history
Medical history and questionnaire - longest part
Urine and bloods
Blood pressure
Weight and height
That’s basically it. They won’t talk about birth plan. It’s really 3rd trimester and even then I feel it wasn’t much of a discussion as I didn’t have anything that strongly. And like others say first scan is 12 weeks.

raspberryjamlove · 10/06/2021 13:23

@expectinglittlebear I had my booking appt on the phone and on that call they arranged the blood/urine test etc for the following day :)

Raindropumbrella · 10/06/2021 13:25

Only loads of questions, BMI calculation and a blood test

I didn’t talk about the birth at all until 36 weeks so don’t get your hopes up!

acciobaby · 30/06/2021 10:20

Please can I ask about this too.
I had a booking app over the phone on Friday and have bloods etc booked for next week. The person doing the appointment fired a load of questions at me and didn't seem particularly happy being asked questions herself so I didn't ask many.

Does anyone know if I'll get my notes and MatEx then? And if I should have a scan booked? She's booked me in for a 16 week appointment at my GP but no scan.

First pregnancy and don't have a clue what I'm doing! TIA and congratulations everyone! Smile

I’m not sure about your notes as my app was all in one but it sounds right they’ve booked the next mw appointments but no scan. The mw will be booking you in using her calendar then will refer you to the antenatal team at the hospital for that appointment. You’ll probably get a letter in the post confirming your 12 week scan appointment.
TakeYourFinalPosition · 30/06/2021 10:31

@acciobaby I'm 16 weeks on Sunday and don't have my notes yet... and I haven't met my actual midwife, but I think I'm meeting her at my 16 week appointment.

When they book in your appointments varies massively by Trust. I got my scan letter in the post the week before, and my 16-week appointment was booked in by text last week. Some places do give you your 12-week scan appointment at your booking in appt, but I don't think it's common.

I'm a FTM too; it's been fun trying to work everything out! It does seem to work, just quite clunkily. I've got used to not knowing when anything is until the week before now Grin Congratulations!

Onehotmess · 30/06/2021 12:09

I had all the health medical questions over the phone. They then asked me to attend the health centre 4 days later.
They took bloods, weight, height, a few more questions, blood pressure, is everything ok at home, carbon monoxide breath test. They booked the 16 week appointment.
They gave me my notes then and said they would email the Mat ex. They also told me that they refer me to the hospital and the hospital arranges the scan.
Mat ex arrived by email and by post a week later, 5 days after that a letter arrived for 12 week scan.
Every trust will have its own spin on this, but it sounds like mine was fairly standard.

Arecklessmanor · 30/06/2021 13:42

In my trust you self refer (online) to the maternity service once you are 6 weeks pregnant. They were very quick to make contact.

I've got blood tests at 10 weeks, and booking appointmentby phone 3 days before 12 week scan. DH can come to the scan.

I've had a private scan at Ultrasound Direct and found them to be very professional.
