We have a nursery room, but obviously in the first couple or 6 months We'll have the baby with us in Our bedroom. (One of my family member said I could sleep in the nursery but that room not as big either so won't fit any kind of bed for me there 😅) Im not too sure if the next to me crib would be better or if We bring his big (70x140 cm) cot bed in. The room not too big, but We could fit the cot bed in. Would be tight a wee bit. Please let me know how You did it 😊 thank you xxxx

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a crib or bedside co-sleeper, we’ve recently updated our best cribs page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their babies. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Do you intend to breastfeed? With my DD we stupidly set the cot bed up in our room but with a C section wound and a breastfed baby I found it to hard to be reaching in to find my tiny baby in a massive cot bed so we shifted it and borrowed a snuz pod which made life so much easier especially in the early months when she fed every 2 hours. This time around we've not bothered with a cot bed and have gone straight to a next to me.

We did cot in our room. They both settled wonderfully in the big cot, swaddled for the first 8 weeks to help them feel snug. I have had 2 sections and didn’t find it tricky to lift them out of the cot at all, you can usually put the mattress higher for newborns. I guess it depends how tall you are and if you think your babies will do 6 months in a bedside sleeper and how tight it will be the room- if you can’t open your wardrobe properly for 6 months then that would be really annoying!

We loved the next to me. We then tried to put cot bed in our room when she out grew it, but ended up co-sleeping till one as it was the only way we could get sleep. Advise is have them in the same room till 6 months minimum but till 1 if you can, its impossible to know in advance if you get a good sleeper or not but everyone I know who has had a next to me has found it worth it, we were v happy with ours.

Thank you all! Yes Im hoping I'll be able to breastfeed, We can change the height on the cot too, but not until the top so maybe would be uncomfortable if I'll have C section. I think We stick with the next to me crib for the beginning just in case, He is Our first baby, so I don't know it will be natural birth or C section. If he stays longer in Our room maybe later We swop for the big cot. Im very excited (and a bit nervous) now.. Im nearly 34 weeks :)

We had a next to me that we used for about six months, she then slept in the bed for another seven months. I found it a pain having her in her cot in the bedroom as it was the worst of both worlds ie had to get out of bed to settle her but she was still in our room so had to be quiet at night (we'll normally watch TV in our room).

lalalapurple · 08/06/2021 13:29

I'd go for the next to me- more convenient in the beginning.

But also lookup safe cosleeping guidelines- some babies don't like to be put down at all and I found it so much easier to breastfeed with baby in the bed with me.
Your baby might not be like mine, but I wish I had known more about bedsharing before I had a baby.

Our 1st we couldn't fit cot in our room, once she outgrew the moses basket she had to go to her own room. She hated it so much that she would cry until she was sick and ended up in our bed most nights.
We moved house before our 2nd and our bedroom is pretty big. All the others have had cot-bed only next to our bed. We kept our twins in the same cot-bed until the sides needed taking down too, they didn't stop sharing beds until they were 5 and moved in with their big sisters (bottom of bunk beds). Will be going straight to cot again for this one.

Chelyanne · 08/06/2021 13:31

I had elcs with my twins and getting them in/out of the cot was fine.

I have a Next 2 Me bedside cot in our bedroom for my 2 month old baby but I have a cot bed in his nursery ready for when he is older. I love the Next 2 Me. If I need to pick him up I can just pull him across and don't need to get out of bed. Sometimes I just like to lay there and watch him sleeping, it feels so special. As others have said great for breastfeeding too, I can just grab him from my bed and feed him straight away.

Nesski · 08/06/2021 19:23

I bought a cotbed and it fits in our room, trying to reduce wastage and headache of having to get rid of it after!

MrsWooster · 08/06/2021 19:27

I’m sure we had the cot next to the bed with the mattresses at the same level and the side rail off so she could just be slid across to feed. I seem to recall tying the cot legs and bed legs together to prevent a gap?

Blughbablugh · 08/06/2021 19:34

I bought a next 2 me after my dd wouldn't sleep at all in the moses basket we had. She slept in it so much better and so much easier when I was feeding her all night to just put her next to me. In fact I've set it up again today as I'm almost 37 weeks with my second. I found it great for doubling up as a travel cot as it folds away in to a bag. I've got a replacement mattress for it this time round as the original was a bit stained after my dd had finished with it.

Littlepaws18 · 08/06/2021 20:49

I bought a snuzpod 4 and it's amazing, best thing I bought for my last child. Big but not too big, really safe a secure. I don't let the side down but it's so easy to pick them up in the night to feed x

BertieBotts · 08/06/2021 20:54

I think the next to me crib type things are a bit of a false economy, a lot of them aren't totally flat to your bed and they don't last very long if you have a big child (maybe this is just my problem as I bake them really long apparently!)

IKEA Sniglar or a normal cotbed converted into sidecar is much more convenient, it's probably what we will do for our next baby. I think I'd want a 60x120 rather than 70x140, just because of getting in and out of bed (an adult bed is normally about 200cm long).

ivfgottwins · 08/06/2021 22:25

I had a next2me for DD and I'm convinced it played a part in her being a terrible sleeper and practically co sleeping to age 4.

With my twins they shared a cot in our room instead of having the next2me and when they got too big I slept in their room and they are such better sleepers

miltonj · 08/06/2021 23:15

Some babies might find a cot bed too big to sleep in at first. And prefer something more cosy. My daughter wouldn't even sleep in the next to me until she was 5 months and only in the Moses basket, so she definitely wouldn't have been put down into a cot bed! They're all different though so who knows!

Twizbe · 08/06/2021 23:18

I used a next to me for both mine.

We had the big cot set up in their room ready and from around 3/4 months ish I'd put them for a nap in there every day. They went into their own rooms at 6 months.

ChocOrange1 · 08/06/2021 23:21

We had a cot for my first and it was fine.

For the second we bought a snuzpod because DD1 was still in the cot.

Honestly the bedside crib was an absolute game changer. We all slept so much better, far more space in the room as well.

DelurkingAJ · 08/06/2021 23:25

We had a Next2Me for DS2 and I adored it. DS1 was in the cot and slept far less well (and so did I as I had to stand up to get him out). Ours has now done four babies so it’s been well used.
