Swimming while pregnant and COVID?

Hi!
I really want to start swimming maybe twice a week. I'm 21 weeks pregnant and have a really high BMI so thinking this'll be good for me - plus I used to love swimming.
I'm just worried about Covid - is it advised to avoid? Maybe more so because of my weight and risk with Covid? I've googled and can't find much on the topic, i haven't got another midwife app for another 5 weeks so was wondering if anyone on here has been going swimming? Or if their midwife has advised against it?
Thanks x

I’ve been swimming at my local leisure centre and it’s felt fine. They tend to be open, clean spaces so I wouldn’t worry. I am also 21 weeks and have had awful back pain so it’s the most comfortable way to get exercise and not seize up completely!

Are you due your vaccine soon? I’m having mine next week, could this help ease your worries at all?

Chelyanne · 03/06/2021 14:35

Swimming is fine. Low risk of infections but if that worries you go at quiet times of day.

Winkywonkydonkey · 03/06/2021 14:36

The water kills covid it's probably one of the lowest risks if you go 'beach ready' and don't spend hours in the changing room on the way out.

SouthwestSis · 03/06/2021 15:44

Yep swimming no higher risk than any other indoor activity, going at quieter times of day is good advice and minimising time changing, but swimming is going to be so beneficial for your health so yes definitely go for it! You have inspired me to look at my local pool too.......

SmidgenofaPigeon · 03/06/2021 15:45

I don’t really know what the risk would be Confused

JewelGarden · 03/06/2021 22:23

It's fine. You're basically immersed in bleach, what could be safer?

ForkedIt · 03/06/2021 22:27

I’m 22 weeks and have been regularly swimming with my toddler

My dad has chronic asthma and swimming used to help, he was keen to get back and was concerned for the same reasons so asked his doc. Doc said there's so much bleach and chlorine at the pool that it's likely to be among the safest indoor exercises but as others have said still just be careful in the changing rooms etc. I'm thinking of starting swimming too xx

ThedaBara · 04/06/2021 18:24

I'm 30 weeks and have been going once per week, it's my me time and I love it. My leisure centre has you book a slot, and only releases enough to ensure the pool isn't ever too crowded, they also ask people to come in their swimsuit under clothes and shower at home where possible to minimise to time in changing room. But apart from that you're dipping yourself in chlorine.
I also go at around 10 on a weekday when all the oldies are out, so it's nice and quiet, everyone is as slow as me, and I assume they've all been vaxxed

Ah that's really helpful thank you! Think I'm going to definitely go and like others have said just be careful in the changing rooms!

Oh that's good! I called my leisure centre and they said they don't book slots anymore - but I've found out the quiet times. Looking forward to it!

Yeah just repeating the fact about the chlorinated water killing Covid. I'm 30 weeks been swimming and loving it x

Smurf123 · 04/06/2021 20:59

I'm 31 weeks and I asked a midwife last week she said she thought swimming pools were relatively safe due to the water and chlorine and the biggest risk would be the changing rooms and to try and avoid them at busy times.
I went today for the first time in almost a year. It's was lovely!

Silkiecats · 04/06/2021 21:03

In the pool very safe - the chlorine kills covid very quickly.

Changing rooms are a bit more risky but either get changed at home or take gel / wipes with you if you are worried.

Silkiecats · 04/06/2021 21:05

There's a lot of lidos opened as well if you have one of those near by which aren't normally open yet though I'ld get a heated one.
