Swimming in the sea this time of year?

I love swimming off the Kent coast this time
of year but have avoided it so far as I’m 21 weeks pregnant. Weather is very tempting this week but am not sure if it’s advised against during pregnancy - does anyone have any experience? Is the water considered too cold?

It's fine, overthinking it!

I’ve been swimming in the North Sea (off the Northumberland coast) all year, no wetsuit. I’m currently 21+ weeks and have had no problems at all. Enjoy it! X

I live on the Kent coast and have been swimming all through the first trimester. I started in January though so feels lovely and warm to me now 😂 I think just get in slowly, stay in shorter times and swim in your depth parallel to the coast instead of out if that makes you feel safer. Enjoy!

To be fair there are always some risks outdoor swimming. If you’re not used to cold water, you can experience after drop which is pretty unpleasant, there is some evidence that is lowers blood pressure, again not necessarily an issue for baby but not nice if you get dizzy. Finally if you swim in places with algae then it can make you really ill.

MrsCremuel · 01/06/2021 22:05

@MrsRobinsonsHandprints that a change in body temp could be harmful, much as it is with hot baths. Not sure the tone of your response is warranted. If you don’t have a useful response, move on and stop trying to bully people on anonymous forums. Brave.

@Peacefulspirit thanks that’s interesting.

@MrsCremuel Don't waste your time on rude posters, they're just looking for attention. I couldn't face that water temperature myself but you should be fine if you're used to swimming in the sea! Maybe just be cautious that there's no warnings or E.coli concerns where you're swimming, might be best to stick to blue flag beaches if possible! I'm also 21 weeks and feel like I've slowed down a bit this week, not walking quite as fast uphill etc so be sure to look after yourself out there!

My midwife told me to get in swimming! Maybe she thought I looked like I was putting on too much weight! Grin
Sea here is very clean though. Also much colder than Kent I imagine! So long as you don't get hypothermia or swim in dirty water it will be fine.
Happy bathing :)

@MrsCremuel thank you very much for posting this question. I was wondering the exact same thing so I asked my doctor & she said perfectly safe but don't do too much to start off (no fear).
Unless I'm missing something the whole point of this forum is to ask questions.......

MrsCremuel · 02/06/2021 11:27

@Newmum110 I know right?!

Ok I’m very excited for a summer of swimming now. My back is killing me this time round already so hoping for some sea bathing miracles!
