Labour with no warning signs?

I'm due anytime now and so far have had no "signs" whatsoever. Anyone on here gone into labour with no warning/twinges? Just curious.

Both of my girls appeared with very little warning. On DD1's due date,I had a show, then the contractions started immediately, very close together.Lucky that I insisted that we went to hospital immediately as she was born after 4 hours 20 minutes[would have been 3 hours, but I was so shocked at the speed of things that I didn't push properly.]

My mums comment on hearing I had given birth was 'But she can't have done, she was in Tescos with me a few hours ago.'

With DD2,waters broke 3 weeks early & she was born 1.5 hours later after half an hour of contractions & 3 pushes.DH was driving me to hospital, telling me not to cough or sneeze in case the baby arrived there & then.

11pm - waters broke
1 am - first contractions
3/4am - 5 cm
8am - started to push

no show, no BH, not particularly tired
Without waters breaking, don't think I would've realised immediately what was going on.

No contractions, waters broke, wanted to push, friend phoned ambulance, they turned up, and i gave birth a few minutes later!
All took about 15-20 minutes, It was really scary!
Not that scary though 'cos i had another one 19 months later, but her labour took 6 hours, which was much better!

halia · 28/11/2007 14:09

went out to birthing class and drink with mate, came home 11.30pm.
Went to bed 12.30pm, restless but that was usual for my whole 8 months of pregnancy!

3am had been dozing, thought I was wetting myself (had very weak bladder during pregnancy, got up to try and reach loo - and flooded my bed! Waters had broken but no other signs.

3.45am thought we had better at least inform the midwives although absolutly nothing except a wet bed so far!

4.30am midwife arrived, not dilated, no contractions, said it would be that afternoon - 8-12 hrs later.

5am, contractions
5.30am contractions 5 minutes apart
6am midwife returned (not believing my husband when he said I was in labour now) - examined me and I was 10cm dilated.

No time at that point for painrelief and certinaly no time to put up water birthing pool.

Baby arrived 8.20am.

(planned for a home birth but arrived 5 weeks early!)

No cot, no nappies, etc

I had however been carrying things into a skip for half the day beforehand!

No signs really with my recent birth. I was just sitting on the sofa, 6.54am, had a mild contraction which I thought was wind. Another 7 minutes later, then 5 minutes, then three...they just carried on every 3 minutes or so and he was born at 10.32am.

Water didn't break till about 10.15 while I was pushing.

First baby my water went first and then Ctx started half an hour later...he was born after about 8 hours.

fruitloop79 · 28/11/2007 14:19

My DS was 2 weeks late. I was told it isnt like the movies, ie waters dont come flooding out. Contractions come 1st.....
Well, I can assure you it can happen like the movies. I had no contractions what-so-ever but a huge flood of waters that took me completely by surprise (thankfully I was at home at the time)
Never did get natural contractions, had to have oxytocin drip to start me off (and boy does that work, ouch!!!)

Good luck, ha ha

A few weeks with awful contractions.

No show, no waters, just turned up at hospital as past my due date and wanted to see if any progress made. I had no build up of contractions and baby was born within a hour of arrival at hospital when told to push. Very little pain. In retrospect I could feel the baby´s head for the day before the birth. But the contrations had been so bad in teh weeks before the birth I had presumed things would get worse again on teh day. They didn´t!

I´m pleased I took that trip to the midwife. DH nearly missed the birth!

YummyMam · 28/11/2007 14:54

5am - Waters broke along with the arrival of the first contraction (no show or any other sign before this)

Contractions were about 10 minutes apart from the start - when started to get closer I went into hospital where I was told I was only about 3cm dilated.

10am 4cm dilated - contractions about 3 or 4 minutes apart

2pm 5cm dilated - contractions 1 minute apart at best - begged them to stick a needle in my back

6pm 5cm dilated - put on oxytocin drip

10pm finally almost fully dilated (although epidural was so strong, I really didn't care by this point)

11:10pm DD dragged out by forceps while 2 midwives told me when to push (couldn't feel a thing)

Completely different labour and birth to what I expected, as was told by so many people that waters breaking is rarely the first sign. I expected at least a day of early labour pains. Funny how almost the exact same scenario has happened to two of my closest friends. Do midwives just not want to scare us by telling us how sudden the start can be?

mrsshackleton · 28/11/2007 15:07

with dd1 when I was booked in for a cs for breech, I had vague discomfort like constipation the day before the cs. Nothing major. I started to bleed so called the hospital who said come in for a check up. We arrived less than an hour later with me still mildly uncomfortable to find I was 7cm. Had to have a terrifyingly quick emergency cs, so quick it went a bit wrong and i ended up having a general anaesthetic and was apparently lucky not to end up with permanent bladder damage. Was terrified all the way through pg with dd2 the same would happen especially as she was breech as well, in the end the hosptial did the cs a bit earlier than usual to allay my fears of an unannounced breech birth at home. You'd have thought quick and painfree was the way to go with labour but it turns out slow and painful ones are there for a reason to give you plenty of time to organise yourself and help. Good luck!

Harri1 · 28/11/2007 15:17

Hi am 40+3 and feeling fed up had a sweep on monday, and a show yesterday but still nothing, what's a girl to do? Any tips to get things moving?

Harri1 · 28/11/2007 15:18

oops typing error 40+6 not 3, blame the hormones!!!!

frumpygrumpy · 28/11/2007 15:21

No signs with DD1, just all of a sudden increasingly painful contractions, DD1 arrived 3 hours later. Nothing with DTs either, I was examined and told labour had started. Luckily I was in the hospital

Olihan · 28/11/2007 15:26

I didn't have any warning with any of my 3 either. Just straight into contractions, mild twinges with ds1 but full on deep breathing ones with dd and ds2.

Don't panic about lack of signs. When I went for my 40wk check with ds2 the mw refused to do a sweep because he wasn't engaged and he was posterior. I went into labour that night and had him in less than 2.5 hours from the first contraction.

One of the ladies on my P/N thread woke up in labour and promptly had her baby in bed as there was no time to get to the hospital.

Not that I am trying to worry you or anything! All the best! xx
