Gestational diabetes

Hi
I’m 30 weeks and had a gtt last week. My fasting results came back fine but after the glucose drink there was a positive result and the doctors have said I have gestational diabetes.
I’ve had a letter through for an appointment with the diabetes clinic for a couple of weeks time so I guess I’ll know more then but I’m just a bit lost as to what happens in the mean time. The dr asked me to phone a number to get a glucose monitor but I have phoned this number several times and it just asks you to leave a message but I haven’t heard anything. I’ve also phoned my health centre to see if they can help but they said it all has to be arranged via hospital.
While I’m waiting for my first appointment, I have started eating really healthily. From my appointment letter it looks like I will have to do another gtt on the day of that first appointment as they have asked that I fast from 11pm the night before. Is this a standard thing to do a repeat test even if you got a positive on the first one?

The other thing I’m concerned about is they said baby is measuring big, 4lbs when I was 29+6. I know the scans can be inaccurate fir weight but still it’s got me concerned. They’ve said now I’ve had this result I will only go to 39 wk max but if growth continues at current rate it will be more like 38 wks. Has anyone had similar and then their baby’s growth slow down once they changed diet/got sugar under control? I’m only 5 ft 3 and the other day they were talking about maybe getting my pelvis measured to see if I will be able to deliver naturally. My last baby was born at 41 wks and 8lb 6 and while everything was thankfully fine, his shoulder did get stuck briefly during delivery. For this reason dr said if I want a c section I can have one.

Sorry for length of post and so many questions, feeling a bit confused at the mo!
Would be grateful for anyone’s insights if they’ve experienced similar.
Thanks x

It is hugely overwhelming, I definitely recommend the GD UK website and linked FB page for advice and support - they were an absolute godsend for me

www.gestationaldiabetes.co.uk/

I was diagnosed at 28 weeks, same as you - fasting fine but 2 hour result high. Also 5 foot 3.

He was measuring 3lb 13 at 28 weeks, had lots of growth scans and he was always measuring big despite the diet changes (managed to stay diet controlled thanks to the website/FB group!). He was measuring 8lb 1 at 36 weeks so they induced me at 38 weeks. He was born 8lb 9, so not too far out really (EMCS after 2 days of labour).

I am 20 weeks now (16 week GTT came back normal so being tested again at 26 weeks) and have said I would rather an elective section this time if I get GD again. There are tons of birth stories etc. on the website too.

It is hard work, but you'll get there :) x

Thank you @Amz6219

I’m very much hoping to stay diet controlled too but I’ve heard that sometimes despite best efforts medication is needed and so I guess I’ll just have to go with whatever happens.
Sounds like he could continue growing at current rate as well then even with changes to diet. At least if I’m being good I know I’m doing all I can! It is a lot to take in!
This is third pregnancy for me, never had gd before or c section so it’s all unknown but I’m leaning towards the c section this time as there’s a chance he could be bigger than last baby, even if I only go to 38 weeks. X

I had gd diagnosed at a similar time. My dd was also considered big but I was allowed to go to 40 +6. Dd was 8lb 13oz and delivered by section for reasons other than gd. I managed to control sugar by diet only and had to check my sugar levels. I am needle phobic and struggled with this

Thanks @guessmyusername
I’ve read things online where people have been allowed to go to 40+ weeks with gd. I think the policy might be different in different hospitals.
Gd is overwhelming anyway, must have been even more of a nightmare with a needle phobia! X
