Urinary retention at week 13

On Sunday I went to A&E because I couldn’t pass urine, my belly was huge and I had pain in abdomen and lower back. Got catheterised and ended up passing 2L of urine. Because of this huge amount I spent the night at the hospital. Got assessed next day and the catheter went out I could pass urine and when checking my bladder it looked I was able to empty it until next day when the same thing happened again. Ended up in A&E and back home with a catheter I need to keep for two weeks.
Not much indication on what’s the follow up other than I shouldn’t be concerned and we’ll see how it goes, no gynaecology exam , nada.
I had my dating scan last week and all went normal, baby is all good but no mention whatsoever to a tilted uterus or retroverted uterus so not sure if this is what’s happening to me. Weird...pregnancy symptom apparently. But because it’s my first, I’d like to seek some reassurance from mumsnet community. Anyone has experienced this? How did it turned out? One of the doctors told me you might need a catheter for the rest of the pregnancy which freaked me out.
Looking forward hearing your stories. Thanks!

Hi, I experienced this at around 15 weeks and then again at 16 weeks. The second time I got sent home with a catheter in and was told of receive an appointment from the TWOK clinic (To Work without catheter) like you I had no idea what was happening and after a week of the catheter and feeling very uncomfortable I got hold of my midwife who managed to sort me an urgent appointment with the consultant. He said that sometimes the uterus doesn't pop out of the pelvis when it should and as it continues to grow in the pelvis it presses against your bladder which then causes retention. He did an internal exam to check it had now flipped out, which it had, he didn't say anything about a tilted uterus until I saw him about something completely different, but assume that's why it happened.

Hope you get sorted soon Flowers

Could it be constipation? I had this, with the backache and urinary retention and it was all due to being constipated (which is not uncommon during pregnancy due to hormone changes).

Thanks! Back from the GP just now, she thinks constipation it's what's causing the retention, even though I go to the loo there's a build up and it will get sorted soon. Hope she's right!!

Thanks so much! I'm glad this got sorted for you :) Which consultant did you see, a gynaecologist? I've been seen by urologists, my GP and I'm trying to arrange a gynaecologist too so I think I will follow your advice and try to get hold of my midwife.

I saw an obstetrics consultant, not gynae or urologist
