Maternity Pay

I'm a teacher and currently trying to decide when to start maternity leave. So I'm looking for some clarity on how maternity pay works at the beginning. If I start maternity leave mid-month do I get paid in full for that month or a percentage? Also, I'm guessing as a teacher I don't accrue any annual leave like employees in non term time jobs would?

Yes if you start maternity mid month then depending on your maternity leave package then half the month will be full pay and the other half pro rat'd

I think teachers have a statutory right to 28 days annual leave it's just that these are taken during school holidays. So I guess depending on when your maternity leave ends you wouldn't get the 28 days on top like other people would

Ie if your maternity leave ended in July then you don't get the summer holidays and annual leave on top - you'd still have to return at the start of the September term

I’m not a teacher, but I do work term time only in a secondary school.

I am currently 23 weeks pregnant. Due in September. I will finish work in July for the summer holidays as normal but will start my maternity leave on 2nd September which would be the day I would be due to start back at work.

I will then take the standard 39 weeks maternity leave which will run until 2nd June 2022. I have been told I will have accrued 18.5 days during this time off so will then add those 18.5 days to that 2nd June date. So my return date will be end of June.

I’ve taken maternity leave with them previously, but it was 7 years ago so I’d forgotten a lot! My HR lady was brilliant at giving me a breakdown week by week of what my pay will be and what leave I accrue etc. It’s probably worth speaking to someone as they may be able to make it super easy to understand.

Thanks both, I will give HR a ring and get them to explain it to me!
