Constant nausea

Morning all

I'm 12 weeks and my nausea isn't showing any signs of letting up yet. I constantly feel sick and whilst eating used to take the edge off it for a while, even that's not working now either. I haven't actually been sick at all (but that may be because in general I'm never physically sick) so I know I've got it much better than others but it's really starting to affect my mood and my ability to concentrate at work.

I spoke to the practice nurse at my GP surgery a few weeks ago and she basically said she wasn't authorised to prescribe me anything and even if I did see a doctor they probably wouldn't due to the risk the medication poses on the baby...

Has anyone been in a similar situation and got help? I feel awful posting this as I know some people suffer with much worse but I just feel so down about it :(

Hello OP,

I’m not sure what the nurse at your practice is talking about- there are several options available to you in terms of well established and researched anti emetics to help with nausea and vomiting in pregnancy.

For context, I am a nurse and also 16 weeks pregnant with my third hyperemisis gravitarium pregnancy. For full disclosure, my sickness is still pretty bad but I am on prochlorperazine and ondansetron and they defo take the edge off. I would push for a consultation with your GP.

The only other thing I have found helpful is getting plenty of rest! I hope it passes for you soon x

I had the same. Absolute constant nausea 6-16 weeks. I was actually sick a couple of times a week. I caved around 13 weeks and got cyclizine. You’ve definitely been given the wrong information, you can absolutely have anti sickness medication; there are many options that are safe during pregnancy. I’d call back and ask for a consultation with a doctor, don’t suffer feeling miserable, it’s just horrible.

That's ridiculous advice from the nurse, there are medications that are safe and common to have. I had this too from 6 weeks until 16 weeks, it was so miserable, nauseous unless I was lying still in bed, which didn't happen much with 2dc under 6! I didn't get medication because it was €100 a month and I was already paying €140 a month for progesterone so just couldn't justify that when I kept hoping it would stop each week.

Before you call the gp have a look at the pregnancy sickness support website. Loads of info there about what they can safely prescribe.

I had constant nausea without sickness too. It got better at about 15 weeks, hope yours gets better or you manage to get some medication.

This part isn't right. There are various types of medications you can take to ease nausea which can often at times be worse than being sick. I had HG with this pregnancy and have been given 3 different types of medication until I found the best one to suit me. In the end an over the counter brand was the best.

The danger does come in later on in pregnancy. But don't be put off by ringing the doctors, they know this and will prescribe you something until then.

@Colinthecaterpillar35 why won’t the GP prescribe you anything for the nausea? I have nausea and I’ve had it since week 5 and I’m now 22 weeks. I also didn’t get prescribed anything to begin with as GP was reluctant due to the possible side effects of the meds as I’d had previous miscarriages. My nausea never went away and at week 14 I was given medication. I still suffer quite bad from it and some weeks are tougher than others. I’m really terrified it won’t go away until I deliver. It’s ruining my whole pregnancy and I’m always miserable. Don’t think I could put myself through this ever again. Sorry I know you probably wanted to hear some positive stories and mines is just sulking x

Sounds exactly like me! I ended up calling my midwife as I just felt awful all the time.... not just nausea but like a horrible brain fog and lightheadedness that seemed to get worse after eating. I started to worry there may be something wrong (like gestational diabetes). My midwife was so lovely, told me "no my lovely, that is just being pregnant I'm afraid - if I had a cure for that I'd be a millionaire!" :D She told me to "sod healthy eating" (I'm on the heavier side and trying to be sensible) and just eat whatever I fancy, and be patient! It sucks though!!!

I should say... I'm 12 weeks too!
