Sugar in urine @ 28 weeks pregnant

Hi,

I have a family history of diabetes (mum and sis both type 1)

I have had a previous pregnancy, no diabetes but baby was on the 100th centile at 39 weeks.

I've had my fasting blood test today for Gestational Diabetes at 9am, then I had my 28 week midwife appt straight after so I hadn't eaten and there was some glucose in my urine.

I won't get the results of the GTT test until Friday, possibly even Monday.

I'm so nervous. My Mum is blind through diabetes, I know that is unlikely to happen to me but I'm really anxious about it. I've tried to eat healthy and I haven't gained much weight other than a huge bump, ive not gone up much on the scales.

Is this completely normal and I'm panicking over nothing?

It sounds like you likely have GD. Don’t worry though! It can very often be managed by diet, and even if not, metformin/insulin are not so bad. And you’ve only got 12 more weeks. I was insulin dependent in my last pregnancy and delivered a 50th centile baby 3 weeks ago with great blood sugars who breastfed/feeds well. Try to express some colostrum from 36 weeks just in case.

Though the GD goes away once you deliver the placenta, you will be at high risk for diabetes for the rest of your life - however I have viewed this as an excellent early warning that I would not otherwise have had.
Good luck!

@recreationalcalpol I'm just in shock. It's been a massive wake up call. I've been eating healthy, albeit probably not enough as I've been rushed off my feet. I wasn't expecting it, I thought I might it avoided it like I did with my first pregnancy.

The diagnosis hit me hard as well. Especially when I had to use insulin. I’m really sorry. But honestly, I’m so glad now that I know my risk of diabetes and can make sure I take steps to deal with it.

I am the same as you - normal weight and healthy-ish eater, but with a family history of diabetes. I just see it as any other dietary intolerance - some people can’t eat gluten for example, and in the same way I am intolerant of carbs. If you are careful, your baby will be fine. Check out websites like seriously low carb for bread and brownies that you can eat, and keto kitchen for doughnuts!

Hi, my mum has GD when she was preg with me and she didn't develop it later on in life and she eats a snickers and red bull every day with out fail 😂

Don't worry too much you don't have long to go! Just do the usual eat healthy and exercise.

Just wanted to add - it's nothing you have done to cause this e.g. diet, so please don't feel guilty! It's just the way your placenta releases hormones which cause your body to not processes sugar effectively hence why it goes when you have the baby x

Hey OP. I had gestational diabetes in my 3rd pregnancy (baby is 3 weeks old now). I completely understand how you must feel right now, I didn't have it in my first 2 pregnancies and it was a huge shock when I was diagnosed this time. My only advice is, take some time to feel how you feel about it, but honestly it is NOT your fault. It's not anything you have done, and it will be ok. There's a supportive group on Facebook called gestational diabetes UK that you might like to look at when you're ready.

I had to take insulin towards the end, it was a bit rubbish but mostly fine and you get used to it all quite quickly. I had 2 massive babies first (over 9lb, over 10lb) but this baby was only 7lb, he is completely fine, passed his blood sugar tests straight away and feeds well.

In my second pregnancy, I ended up with a midwife appt at 25 w (something unrelated), and during the routine urine test it showed I had +3 glucose! And I hadn't eaten or drank anything since the night before so definitely wasn't related to that. I was convinced I had GD and was quickly booked in for the GTT. It came back totally normal and I never had glucose in my urine again. It was really odd.

@Hufflepuffsunite I'm hoping it's just that, just a fluke! I'd love it if that's all it was, fingers crossed it is
