Hip pain in bed

Toastedsesame · 23/05/2021 20:45

I'm 16 weeks and I can't lay on my front in bed anymore (my standard sleep position) so I lay on my side. This has been fine but the past two nights I have been having a pain in my hip where I have been laying, feels like a burning/pressure type pain like I've been resting on the same point too long. I end up rolling over, the same thing happens the other side, roll over again.. repeat all night long. I'm bloody knackered! I bought a pregnancy pillow to try and help but it still happens. My mattress is orthopaedic and on the firmer side but I have a thin quilted mattress topper.

Has anyone had this, is there anything I can do?

This won't help you I'm afraid, but I have exactly the same problem with hip pain in bed - sleep on one side, wake up with pain - turn on to other side, wake up with pain. I've resorted to taking paracetamol, nothing else for it Sad However, I'm not pregnant and I would guess that I'm considerably older than you.

MintGreenLife · 23/05/2021 21:59

@Toastedsesame I don’t think there’s much you can do I’m afraid. I’m 30 weeks now and this started for me around the same time as you, I end up turning over around once an hour in the night as the side I’m laying on gets too sore. I have a pregnancy pillow which is great, but not sure if it helps with the hip pain much x

Drowninginwashing · 23/05/2021 22:01

Most people get this. It's rubbish. And it starts earlier with each pregnancy! With my second i had it from about 14 weeks! It is painful and annoying but I'm afraid it's part of pregnancy. A pregnancy pillow that goes between your legs will help a lot.

orangejuicer · 23/05/2021 22:02

Two pillows might help but yes it is miserable. I actually slept better on the settee from time to time so try out other places if you have options. Hope you find a way to get more comfortable soon.

Heathofhares · 23/05/2021 22:04

I had terrible PGP during pregnancy and found one of these to be a real help
www.thesnoozle.com/. It made turning over much easier and less painful so I moved more and the hip pain was reduced. A soft mattress topper on the orthapedic mattress might help too.

Nightmanagerfan · 23/05/2021 22:20

Get a “snoogle” or slide/glide sheet - it’s a tube of silky fabric that you put under you and it makes turning over effortless. Even if you toss and turn it won’t make you so tired

Nightmanagerfan · 23/05/2021 22:21

I meant a snoozle as PP has said!

BlueHairGirl · 23/05/2021 22:32

I had this roughly around the same time (or possibly a few weeks later) and luckily it was fixed right away by sleeping with a regular pillow between my knees. I'd suggest trying that and if it doesn't work look into a proper pregnancy one

Tee20x · 23/05/2021 22:37

I also had this OP it was awful and came on so suddenly. One day I was fine and the next my hips would make an awful crunching sound when turning over or getting out of bed.

Sometimes it would get so bad that I physically wouldn't be able to walk properly and instead would shuffle - discussed with my doctor and midwife and was told that normally I would have been referred to physio but they wouldn't be able to due to the pandemic :(

I honestly thought I wouldn't be able to walk without pain again but almost immediately after the birth things returned to normal.

Read up on the advice for PGP and like previous posters have said sleep with pillows between legs etc

Toastedsesame · 23/05/2021 22:38

Thanks for all the suggestions, I will definitely look into a snoozle!

I have the dreamgenie pregnancy pillow but that hasn't helped as yet.

I have had the same, since about 12 weeks. Weirdly I have noticed if I try and move around more in the evenings, it isn't so bad. I have been walking in the evenings, doing gentle yoga etc; but also the main thing that worked for me is putting a regular pillow between my legs. I always wake up on my back though! Oops.

Tvscreen · 24/05/2021 12:10

I have this as well. I have a bbhugme which has helped massively as does regular movement during the day. I try to do a gentle 30 min exercise class 2 times a week and also get a swim in once a week and go for a walk. I found my hips hurt like hell if I don’t do any form of exercise in the day. I hope it gets better for you!

Toastedsesame · 24/05/2021 12:48

Omg all of you exercising so much 😅 where do you get your energy? I'm knackered 24/7.

I have three layers of mattress topper which has helped (folded the spare one in half to double the thickness)
I also find extending my bottom leg (rather than curling up in foetal position) helps distribute the weight rather than all pressing onto hip bone.
Finally I place bolster between knees AND feet, for some reason it helps me!
Good luck!!!

Tvscreen · 24/05/2021 16:25

@Toastedsesame

Omg all of you exercising so much 😅 where do you get your energy? I'm knackered 24/7.
When I say gentle exercise, I mean shuffling about a bit and faffing with a resistance band and when I say swimming I really mean about 10 mins of actual exercise then 20 mins of floating 😂 I have to force myself to do it but when I do it makes me feel good!
MrsB2019x · 24/05/2021 17:44

I have this too and I’m 28 weeks now. I sleep with a pillow in between my legs too and also have a single duvet underneath the bedsheet for a bit of extra padding which has helped a little.

I saw a physio today and she recommended when turning over in bed to go on your hands and knees and turn that way rather than go onto your back then the opposite side - apparently much less strenuous! I’m not so sure but I’m willing to give anything a go at this point 😂 she also suggested putting a pillow behind my back so I can angle myself onto the pillow slightly so not all my weight is on my hip - will try that tonight too!

Toastedsesame · 24/05/2021 17:53

@MrsB2019x was thinking of trying a duvet underneath me too! The getting up on your hands and knees seems like more work?! 🤔

ElderMillennial · 24/05/2021 17:56

I had this and didn't really find a solution except to change sides during the night. I'm not sure exactly when I had it but I am 33+5 now and haven't had it for a while.

I've read sleeping on top of a duvet can help and magnesium spray can help with various pregnancy aches and pains.

MrsB2019x · 24/05/2021 18:40

@Toastedsesame I said that and she said it kinda is but isn’t so pressured on the hips apparently! My poor DH is now gonna have to put up with me trying to maneuver myself in that way after already having to put up with me performing 3 point turns just to roll over 😂

LaMadrilena · 24/05/2021 18:46

I found the pregnancy pillows didn't help much either. As a couple of other posters have said, what worked for me was a folded duvet (or mattress topper etc), which gives a bit of cushioning.

Toastedsesame · 24/05/2021 21:29

Thanks for all the suggestions here, really appreciated. I'm going to invest in a luxurious mattress topper I think. Ikea do memory foam ones that I like the look of.

Waitingforbabypage · 24/05/2021 21:55

I have the same, I literally make a nest of pillows now, I use a flatter V pillow to cup around my hip.

orangejuicer · 25/05/2021 07:53

This will depend on your circumstances but I found the pregnancy pillows useful for the first few days after birth in propping me up to sleep after a c section.

Anything you get now for comfort you'll make use of later so go for it.

ArtfulScreamer · 26/05/2021 13:22

I've had this both pregnancies, last pregnancy I folded a double duvet up and put it under the bed sheet this time around we have a bamboo memory foam topper and I've not needed the folded duvet. I still get a feeling of pressure if I've been on one side to long but it's easily remedied by turning over.

bakingdemon · 26/05/2021 13:36

I found a thin regular pillow better for putting between my legs than one of those massive pregnancy pillows, and that really helped
