Clexane worries

I have been advised to take clexane from 28weeks pg.
My risk factors are BMI and age (37)
My BMI is high, but I am also quite muscular. Even at dress size 10 I weighed 12st.

I am worried about the longer term use of clexane. Not only before birth but also being asked to take it PP for 6 weeks.
I read that use over 3mths can permanently deplete 1-2yrs of calcium and my risk of osteoporosis is raised.
I do have GD and I read that diabetes was contraindicated. I spoke with my GD Dr and she brushed it of saying they regularly prescribe it to diabetics without cause for concern.
I've tried to discuss my concerns with the midwife at the hospital and really my fears were not alleviated.
I am going to call my community midwife this week to try to discuss.

I am normally fit, healthy with no pre existing conditions and I'm active daily with a reasonably good diet.

Has anyone declined the injections? I obviously do not want a blood clot! But I do not want to needlessly inject with what I can gather are painful injections that leave bruises.
Thanks in advance Flowers

Hi, I was told to take aspirin throughout my pregnancy, booking in BMI was 37, at a growth scan at about 28 weeks I saw a different consultant to my usual, she asked for me to be re-weighed and my bmi was 41 so she prescribed Clexane 60mg, it was only when I wen back 4 weeks later and saw my usual consultant and asked for another prescription for it I'm he said I shouldn't have been prescribed it so it was stopped but told I would likely need it for 6 weeks after the birth.
My midwives never commented about why I was taking it although the saw the bruises on my stomach and commented about me taking it- I guess the midwives just thought as the consultant had prescribed it it was ok.
I wonder if you could call the hospital switch board and ask for your consultants secretary and query it directly if you're still away off another consultant appointment?
Good luck x

I declined them while pg but did take them for a short period post delivery - maybe 3 weeks

LittleAurora · 23/05/2021 20:53

@DonGray can I ask why you declined and what were your risk factors?

@ChasingARainbow thank you for your experience. My BMI is 30

I took it during the whole of my pregnancy as am high risk for blood clots because of an inherited clotting disorder. So I had a more obvious risk factor. I don't know how the risk factors are now judged in terms of meeting the threshold. However I've not known it to be a problem for anyone with diabetes. I was taking calcium and vitamin D supplements alongside it and afterwards, so you could ask about that. I got very good at doing the injections and rarely bruised. If you use the fattest bits of flesh you have, that helps!
A couple of other things to be aware of: first, pregnancy depletes your bone density anyway so while you might not want it to be worse than it has to be, you won't avoid it entirely anyway. Second, once you come off the treatment it will build back up. I've been on it for over a year at a time and this happened to me.

@ShakeTheDisease thanks for the reply. I had read that the depletion from clexane is permanent and irreversible. I'll have another look at that.
I do alot if physical contact sport, weight lifting and I'm a motorcyclist. I want to pick all these things back up after baby is born and when I feel ready obvs. Weak bones is not an option 😂

My risks were being over 40, BMI and number of pregnancies
I have a bleeding disorder so I'm more likely to bleed too much
Consultant said I was still at risk of a blood clot despite this

ShakeTheDisease · 23/05/2021 21:21

Ah, I was on dalteparin. It is for the same purpose so could you request that instead? Sorry, I said 'it' without thinking about any brand differences.

ShakeTheDisease · 23/05/2021 21:22

Also, the weights should help your recovery. I was told to do weight-bearing exercise in particular.

fatisnotafeeling · 23/05/2021 21:32

I have 4 DC and took clexane from the beginning right through to 6 weeks PP.

This from is ranging from 11yrs ago and my youngest is 1. I am 40 also lift weights and do a lot of running and haven't found any problems with my bones so far.

I have no choice but to take it as I have a clotting condition which caused me to have 6 losses because the placenta was failing due to clots.

Thank you all for your input. Really great to hear your experiences. I do not have a clotting issue. Just some ticks on a check list sadly.
