Car seat recommendations

Hi all

I am starting to make decisions around what products/brands I may go with when purchasing items for our baby.
I am struggling with finding a carseat - I had set my sights on a Joie one that is suitable from birth to 4years old, and had a swivel function which was great.
It was only after more reading I realised because of how long this chair is intended to last, it is quite heavy and therefore not really suitable for frequent removal e.g. if baby fell asleep in chair etc.
I'm now back on the hunt for a chair! Ideally I would like a chair that can be removed when they are a baby for ease, and I would like a swivel base.
Using these two "musts", what chair would you recommend?

I’m not sure you can have a swivel base and be able to remove it as the ones we looked at all had the isofix attached. We’ve got the joie I spin as baby’s are not supposed to stay in the car seat long so if they fell asleep we would still transfer them to cot/pram etc

I have the cybex cloud z (little one isn’t here yet) and I love it. It comes with a swivel base and an infant car seat which you can remove from the car to carry etc. It also can be made into a lie flat position so baby can be in it for longer periods of time (while not in the car). When your baby outgrows it you buy the sirona z which is the next seat up and fits on the same base. So that one just stays in the car and swivels on the base. I’m really impressed by it

Thank you for replies!

@sarah13xx that sounds exactly what I'm looking for! Did the base cone with your seat or did you need to buy it separately?

For easy removal you're talking about an infant carrier, these aren't normally swivel, but due to the popularity of the Cybex Cloud Z there have recently been four new ones released onto the market.

So you have the Cybex Cloud Z which is still very popular and a good option. It has a recline option when the seat is off the base which is good. Not totally lie flat (it can't replace a carrycot) but allows you to lie the baby a bit more flat if they are asleep in the seat or you want to use it on the buggy.

Then the newer ones:

Maxi Cosi Pebble 360 - this one has really good inserts for newborn, the Pebble series is one of the most popular and liked car seats over the last 10 years.

Maxi Cosi Coral 360 - this one has a hard shell which you can use on the base in the car, or put onto your pushchair but if you just want to carry the baby without using it on a pushchair, the internal part comes out and is much more lightweight - this is actually a really clever use of the swivel feature IMO!

Britax Baby-Safe i-size 3 - version of Britax's Baby-Safe series but made compatible with the more universal "Maxi Cosi style" pushchair adapters and a swivel base. These are brilliant seats as well. Can't beat Britax quality and they have an internal recline system which works differently to the Cybex one so you can actually use it in the car. There's also an option on the base to tilt it in order to counteract really sloping seats which can be a good feature.

Britax Baby-Safe i-Sense - same seat but with built in lights.

You also have the Recaro combination seats (salia elite or Zero.1 elite) which are worth looking at, these are big 0-4 years seats like the Joie Spin, but they come with a little click in/out infant carrier, so for the first 9 months or so you can carry the baby into the house in the carry portion if you prefer. Those infant carriers are a little bit smaller, much lighter, and a bit more complicated to attach to a pushchair, but certainly an option worth looking at. It used to be that the cost of the Recaro seats were offputting, but TBH they actually cost around the same amount as a lot of these infant carrier + spin base combinations so it is well worth investigating if you want the combination of longevity and convenience.

I will say if you go for an infant carrier, the spin is a bit gimmicky and not 100% needed, it adds a huge amount to the price as well. If you think you'll want to use the next stage seat on the same base then it's worth it to pick a base which can swivel. However it's worth being aware you'll be able to choose from a huge range of seats for the next stage which don't need a base, so in some ways the multi-seat base can be a bit gimmicky as well!

I second PP with cybex cloud z with the base z. The swivel and lie-flat functionality is brilliant. It detaches from the base and can be clipped onto the pram. You can get bundles where the seat and base come together. We got our seat in a bundle with the cybex priam and we bought the base z separately.

BertieBotts · 23/05/2021 12:51

You have to buy all the bases separately apart from the Recaro seats which come as a package.

Ameteurmum · 23/05/2021 13:28

I had a maxi cosi pebble and then graduated to a joie 360. For me, the ease of getting the seat in and out and attaching it to the pram etc was everything. The spinning chair helps when they are heavier and less co-operative!

Thank you so so much for all the replies! It feels like such a minefield so this is all really useful to try and understand what I'm looking for xx

The cybex cloud z came with the base but we haven’t bought the sirona yet. It is quite a bit of money but it’s our first baby so I will use it again hopefully. There’s different bundles where the base and car seat comes with a few different prams too

Hello everyone, sorry if I spoil the thread but my son is now outgrowing the Joie 360. Any recommendations for 4+?
