Black mould in washing machine draw

Hello, I’ve done the stupidest thing.
This morning I went to put my daughters clothes in the washer but when I went to put the powder in the draw I could see a bit of black so I pulled the washing machine draw out and it was black everywhere in the draw and I had only cleaned it out not long ago.
So I cleaned it again this morning with one of those sonic cleaner brushes and stuff with disinfectant but I didn’t realise I think it’s me just being stupid that I didn’t realise it was black mould and I cleaned it without a mask and gloves and I’m 25 weeks+1 pregnant now and I just feel stupid for cleaning black mould and not realising, really naive of me but I’m a bit worried now as it’s obviously been all over my hands and probably breathed it in too!
I’m definitely having a bit of anxiety about it because obviously black mould can harm the baby. Should I ring my midwife or something?
I’m under my mental health parental team but they’re not open on Saturday so I can’t ring them at the moment and is this something to ring my midwife about?
Thanks.

Its not called a draw!

Auto correct sometimes sticks a head in where it isn't wanted (like my its above which should be it's) but it doesn't change drawer to draw.

Bleach doesn’t really do anything against mould, other than bleach it (i.e. turn it white) so you can’t see it anymore. Eventually it wears off and turns black again.

Make a paste of lemon juice and salt and use that to clean it. It will be able to break through the mould’s natural defences and actually kill it so it will take longer to return.

Also works for walls, grout, etc. I used to live in a very damp flat!

Don't worry, Op. Neither you nor your baby are that fragile. Clean the drawer out with a bit of bleach and an old toothbrush - make sure it doesn't splatter in your eyes.

Apparently vinegar can kill mould so maybe spray that on it

DRAWER

FreezerBird · 22/05/2021 15:27

The powder drawer in my washing machine hasn't had any gunk or mould in it since I stopped using fabric conditioner/softener if that helps from now on OP.

Guys calm down with the draw/drawer comments Jesus Christ does it impact you all that much? She’s asking for advice not for you all to over react about a certain word, haven’t you got anything better to do? 😂
Anyways I usually clean mine out with white vinegar and baking soda with an old cloth that I throw away afterwards and one of those dental tooth brushes that someone else mentioned usually does the trick 😊

I would think that a large proportion of people a. Do not clean out that drawer and b. Would not even think twice about breathing in a tiny bit of mould. It’s almost impossible to completely avoid mould for 9 months - there was even a similar post about black mould in a bathroom just a few days ago. We’re all exposed to bits of mould all the time. I wouldn’t worry about it and imagine if there is any risk then it’s more from prolonged, repeated exposure.

You will honestly be absolutely fine and so will the baby. It might be an idea to get some help for your anxiety around hygiene. Don’t worry about trying to keep up with Mrs Hinch. It’s better to enjoy your baby when she arrives, than stress about crumbs on the floor and mould in the washing machine.

To stop it getting mouldy in the first place just leave it open to air dry after a wash.

Never needed to clean mine my whole life.
I’m lazy though so I like quick wins 😂.
