Hi all,

New on here! Expecting baby 14.6.2021.

I’ve had a healthy pregnancy so far, all well with baby and currently on track.

I had my 36 week appointment and they weighed me. Obviously knew I was going to be a lot heavier but it’s turns out my bmi was under 30 but now way over and they are concerned. I have been transferred to a consultant booked in next Wednesday.

Has any one else has this issue? I am
Unsure where this now leaves me and the pregnancy.

Thanks
Lisa x

I'm not sure bmi counts during pregnancy?

In my trust they only worry about bmi over 30 at your booking appointment.

No well that’s what I thought? Clearly it’s not and
It’s become an issue :/

I started around bmi 27 at 67kg ish
And I'm now 78kg at 37 weeks so over bmi 30 and nothing has been Mentioned.
I wouldn't think much of it . Women of all sizes have healthy pregnancies all the time

How much has it gone up by?

If you've gained what they deem an excessive amount during pregnancy then they would be concerned. You are at higher risk of some problems if you are classed as obese so they need to involve consultants to ensure they are giving you the best care possible.
Carrying extra fat doesn't always lead to complications though so don't worry about it too much.

Bmi is totally pointless late in pregnancy. You might have a growth scan. I pile weight on in pregnancy and no one has ever weighed me after 10 weeks x

Hello Everyone!

I currently have a BMI of 24.8 and am just over 10 weeks pregnant. I am worried that I am already on the verge of being classed as overweight and early on in pregnancy. Does/ did anyone else have this BMI in early pregnancy?

I feel like I should be very careful not to gain too much weight in my pregnancy now.

Any advice?

xxxxx

Hi @KittyParrish and congratulations on your pregnancy!

Try not to worry, your weight is absolutely fine. My BMI was in the overweight category at booking and nobody cared (except me!) - it's only if it's over 30 or 35 at booking that people might need additional monitoring or medication.

I asked about weight gain in pregnancy and was told I definitely shouldn't be trying to either lose weight or avoid gaining weight. Our bodies will need to gain weight as the baby grows, the placenta develops, the uterus enlarges, etc... The important things are 1) to eat a balanced diet and include gentle exercise in our lifestyles where we can (this helps with the normal development of the pregnancy as well as helping keep weight gain within expected ranges); and 2) to keep an eye on weight changes as the pregnancy progresses (too much weight gain later on could be a sign of complications, too little and the baby might not be growing as expected).
