i know nothing, but is heprin blood thinning stuff? my little sis had to take asprin during her last pregnancy due to 3 miscarriages because of a blood clotting problem. it worked and my lovely niece has just gone 2. i would ask crap consultant about it, is there no way you can get as better one?

OracleInaCoracle · 17/11/2007 08:24

Heparin comes in afew different forms but is as spugs suggested a blood thinning drug usually injected sub cutaneously (just under skin) in preganant women at risk due to blood clotting disorders such as pulmonary embolism. It can also be administered in hospital intravenously on a continuous drip. Are you having heparin or think you may be prescribed it?

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 17/11/2007 08:31

can u ask for blood tests to find out why? i know both ky sister have a blood clotting disorder and were injecting clexane in their last pregnancies.

what is LWH. I was referred to recurrent mc clinic at st marys in paddington, it was along wat to travel as I am in the north but it was worth it. It is run by prof Reegan and apparently she is one of the best in this field. The test for the blood clotting problem came back ok with me and I was told that it is not always accurate so they said I could just take the low dose asprin if I wanted so I did and my next two preg were a success. It might of been a coincidence or it could of been the asprin. I hope you ok

I have had six miscarriages. I was prescribed heparin and aspirin for the last 3 miscarriages. They thought I had a low protein s, and I still miscarried. I then went to see Raj Rai at st.marys recurrent miscarriage clinic. He ran more tests and found the protein s was normal but the thromoelastogram studies were abnormal, which is still a clotting abnormality. Raj feels that heparin will not help but 150mg aspirin is the correct treatment. I am now 9.5 weeks pregnant and just taking the aspirin. Hopefully this will work. Last scan at 8.5 weeks was very good. Heparin is not something you want to be taking unless under expert advice and there is good medical grounds to be prescribed it. It depends what sort of clotting problem you have or if you are high risk for blood clots.

mummyofgirls · 17/11/2007 15:55

Think LWH probably refers to Low Molecular Weight Heparin.

OracleInaCoracle · 17/11/2007 15:58

sorry, LWH is liverpool womens hospital. im going (possibly) thru my 6th early mc at the moment and i need to know why!

is LWH your nearest specialist place?

mummyofgirls · 17/11/2007 16:04

Oh this is terrible lissielou. I thought perhaps you were having heparin at the mo. think I have caught up now and you are looking for a referral to your nearest specialist clinic.

OracleInaCoracle · 17/11/2007 16:18

no, theres a fertility unit at RSH but they are awful (they delivered ds)

mummyofgirls · 17/11/2007 16:29

lissie, the mention of RSH got my attention - I live in Newport and also had a dreadful experience of RSH, but thankfully before it got to the giving birth stage so had time to be referred to Stoke. I have no advice about mc or relevant clinics but am happy to listen x

OracleInaCoracle · 17/11/2007 16:31

lucky! they put my bladder back in the wrong place, left me labouring for 3d and missed GBS, as a result it got into my uterus. awful place!

Wonder if this could be contributing to the problems you have subsequently had? How are you this afternoon?

OracleInaCoracle · 17/11/2007 16:52

im sure that its their fault. we did complain but they attributed my "failure to progress" to ds's position (which they knew about)

im not good tbh, dont know whats happening and feel so sad

If you not happy with your consultant I would consider being referred to st marys in paddington, they were very good. Hope you ok this morning. Thinking of you and your dh

I had a private appt and tests with a consultant following my second m/c. After blood tests he found a possible gene mutation, that causes clotting problems and poss m/c (I had had 2 x DS without probs prior to m/cs). He said that even if nothing had shown up on the blood tests then he would have put me on the heparin anyway as it has a higher "take home baby " rate.
I have been taking it since I got my BFP and am 39 + 3 atm.
I don't think they can do the blood tests if you are pg / miscarrying, but given your history push really hard for a referral to a specialist / epu. I know St Mary's has a long waiing list, but to be honest I got fantastic treatment from my consultant who also sees people on NHS in my area following their 3rd m/c, so it's worth researching your local area.
