Scan worry

Hello,

I am currently 15 weeks and I had my scan at 11 weeks 2 days. However, I’m been really worrying about my scan photo. On the day of my scan, she showed me the baby and it was moving which was so exciting and the sonographer sort of paused and asked me about fibroids and informed me that one of my fibroids had grown. She spent some time measuring it and then it went a bit quiet so my partner asked if the baby looked ok (even he felt awkward) and she just said very slowly “... it’s all... fine...” and I just felt really unconvinced, as did my partner.

Anyway, she gave me a scan photo for free. I have attached it. My worry is that it doesn’t seem to look like other people’s scans, it seems that the sac looks a bit weird? It doesn’t look like a complete sac and the baby seems unclear?

I know I might be being paranoid, I just wondered if anyone had any thoughts. Would be really thankful!

After I left the scan room I asked her what her thoughts were again and she just went back to the fibroids and said “oh don’t worry about the fibroids it’s fairly normal in the first trimester for them to grow” and then just sort of carried on and I went to get my bloods taken. It was just a surreal experience. Sort of not quite a positive as I thought it would be....

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

A panicked mum to be.

Hi there. Was this NHS? If so they would tell you if something was wrong, that is the entire point of the scan. There is no reason why they wouldn't. If they were worried or unsure they would call in a colleague. They're not going to send you away with no comments if there is a problem.

They go quiet during scanning because it is a really hard job to see everything they need to see. They have a long list of measurements and views they need to capture exactly right and the baby is tiny and wriggling constantly. Whenever I have had one the sonographers have actually said 'don't worry if I go quiet'.

Finally, please don't try to read into your scan. It is a snap-shot and what you are seeing won't be the full picture. Sonographers do a lot of training in order to interpret the images!

Hope this helps. Congratulations and try to stop worrying x

Hi @Drowninginwashing

Thank you so much for your quick response. It was NHS. It’s my first pregnancy and I am so new with all this I suppose I just stupidly keep looking at my scan pic too much. I reckon it was probably because she was measuring the fibroids and concentrating on getting the info on those as well as all the other measurements.

I’m glad to hear that if they did have concerns they would tell us then and there.

Just need to take a chill pill and look forward to the next scan in June :)

@Ems2111 they have got to tell you if they have any doubts whatsoever! So honestly don't worry, if there was even the slightest concern she would of said. She was probably just concentrating hence the slow response.

At my scan they sonographer had the slight feeling my placenta my of been attached to old c section scar, and he told me and I couldn't stop worrying, I said to my consultant I'd rather not of known, and she said legally they Have got to tell you if there was even a hint of doubt. So honestly do not worry! If they didn't tell you anything they didn't see anything xxxxx

The photos look completely normal to me (I see 100s a week), and as above they are obliged to tell you any concern they have. Lots of things can make a scan less clear eg. if your placenta is anterior, if you have less fluid, even if you're a bit dehydrated. Don't worry OP. She was probably just concentrating while trying to talk! Congratulations. X

Hope you are ok OP.

I cried at every single one of my scans when I was pregnant with DS, even though they were all fine, it's easy to get wound up.

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone.

Aww bless you. Some sonographers have a terrible bedside manner! I’ve been there before. If there was anything wrong they would definitely tell you, and not say all was fine. They often go quiet because they are concentrating and just forget how stressful it can be for the poor woman! Your scan picture looks totally normal to me- just a little blurred. But that doesn’t mean anything at all- just the quality of the picture she took!

mabelmint · 17/05/2021 23:00

It's because the scan was at 11 weeks, if they do it at 12/13 weeks it tends to be clearer and that traditional scan look.

I'v had anomalies found on scans and they always always air on the side of caution if they have any doubts.

Just touching on your scan photo's, the NHS dont really care about the scan photos they give to you and if they are a good ahot or not. As long as they can see what they need to see they dont care what it looks like. My 12 week scan photos where all crap, not one really resembled anything baby like lol and I felt alot like the doctor was of thw opinion well your lucky to be getting this photo lol! So dont worry about it not looking like other peoples. If you want a lovely shot get a private scan and they will print you off as many as you want and any angle you want.
