5 weeks pregnant - should I have my 2nd AstraZenica Jab??

Hey everyone. I'm in two minds about having my second AstraZenica vaccine this week, im aged 29 and this is my second pregnancy. I had gestational diabetes last time so I am classed as a higher risk.

I had my first jab back in March before I got pregnant and now I'm so worried of something happening to the baby as a result of having my second vaccine!

Called the gp and they said it's up to me! So not helpful

Just wondered what you would do if you were me? Or if anyone has been in the same situation and had their vaccine x

I am six weeks pregnant and having my second AZ jab in a couple of weeks. I will go ahead as there is no data or reason to suggest any negative impacts from the vaccine whereas there is significant data on the severe negative impacts that Covid can have on pregnant women and their unborn babies.

mswales · 06/06/2021 19:51

Also @albimix side effects from the second dose seem to be rarer than from the first

Saoirse82 · 07/06/2021 09:59

@AlbiMix im due to have my 2nd dose on wed, I'm extremely anxious about it. I was really reassured after speaking with my cousin but as time ticks on the panic is setting in. I think a fever with the 2nd jab is much less likely, I had a fever with my first so I hope so! I will update after I've had it if I have the courage to go through with it but I probably will as mswales said we know the possible impact that covid can have on pregnant women and their unborn babies but there's nothing to say the vaccine has any negative impact.

Hi,

I’m just wondering how many of you ladies have fallen pregnant after receiving both of the AstraZeneca vaccines?

I’ve had both of mine due to gestational diabetes and planning on trying for another baby soon.. but after reading so many different things online it’s got me a bit worried. I just wondered how many of you have actually fallen pregnant after having them :)

Girlmama3 · 08/06/2021 09:48

I'm fairly sure the blood clots have occurred after the first az vaccine. The BBC link here says there have been no cases of blood after second doses. Obviously it's still an unknown for pregnant women.

@Saoirse82 good luck today, let us know how you get on! 🤞

@AmandaLaura I've only had one dose of AZ but I got pregnant soon after. I had a miscarriage, got vaccinated 2 weeks later, and then got pregnant in the first cycle we tried (second cycle post MC).

@Girlmama3 it does seem rarer for second doses. My fear is the fever really, I'm waiting to see if they get more data on effectiveness of AZ after one dose against the delta variant as it seems pretty variable atm.

Saoirse82 · 09/06/2021 19:26

Hi girls, so had my 2nd dose today. No side effects as yet and can feel baby wiggling away as I write this. Had a midwife appointment this afternoon too and heard the babys lovely wee heartbeat. The last time it took 10 hours for the side effects to kick in so I'll be waiting with bated breath and fingers crossed.
@AmandaLaura I fell pregnant 4 or 5 days after having my first AZ jab, id been off birth control for 7.5 years although not actively trying really as in tracking ovulation etc, only did that for the first 3 month after coming off bc, but had been diagnosed with Unexplained infertility and even had a round of ivf a few years ago that unfortunately resulted in miscarriage. So this pregnancy was a massive shock and absolutely no negative effects on fertility for me, quite the opposite!

ElmtreeMama · 11/06/2021 12:48

I've just had my second one this morning at 16+2
Will keep you all updated

AlbiMix · 12/06/2021 23:39

Thank you so much for the updates @Saoirse82 @ElmtreeMama hope you're both doing well!

Saoirse82 · 14/06/2021 22:56

Yes, all good. Had no side effects from 2nd jab which was great. And baby is fine and starting to little jabs that can be felt on the outside. Im so glad I've had the 2nd dose now.

AlbiMix · 15/06/2021 15:55

Thanks for the update @Saoirse82 and great news you haven't had side effects this time around. How many weeks are you now?

How did you get on @ElmtreeMama, any side effects for you after dose 2?

I'm so grateful for people being brave and then telling us about it!

ElmtreeMama · 15/06/2021 16:05

Absolutely no side effects at all!!!

I have a private scan at weekend so will update when I found out she's ok, but so far so good x

AlbiMix · 17/06/2021 14:59

Amazing @ElmtreeMama!

Had my first midwife appt today at 8wks, 4 days. I asked about having the second dose of the Astra Zeneca (I had first dose in March due to my work and was due to have 2nd dose a couple weeks back) and she told me to hold off for now until there is more information. I have spoken to two GP’s and they both had differing opinions about getting it at all. The midwife said she could not recommend I have the AZ as the preferred vaccine is the Pfizer/ Moderna. She gave me the details of the midwife who works specifically with pregnant women with covid, in the hope that she may be able to give a bit more information for which to make an informed decision. So stressful when no one wants to put their neck on the line and yet they have more ‘anecdotal evidence’ than me! Interestingly the Irish gov guidance says not to have the second dose before 14 weeks due to risk of mc. 😖
The midwife said ‘we need to be informed of what to advise pregnant women as this is going to happen more and more often and we don’t know what to say’. Any more reassuring stories out there? What are others thinking to do?

Shann24 · 18/06/2021 19:39

Hi all,
I am new to this forum, I was reading this chat online as I am in the same position as you ladies. I am currently 5 weeks pregnant and I had my first vaccine in March of AZ. I am due to go abroad in 3 weeks time so the vaccine is needed, I found out I was pregnant 2 days before my second dose was due. It was a very hard choice due to lack of evidence but I went ahead with my second vaccine yesterday at the hospital, I am also a dental nurse so I am counted as high risk. I just wanted to tell you that I was extremely poorly with my first dose of AZ. The second dose I had yesterday I didn’t feel a thing, I’ve had no side effects and my pregnancy symptoms did not change. I was extremely worried for my baby as we don’t know if it cause birth defects or anything yet.. but I spoke with a doctor and she said not to worry and I spoke with the hospital nurses and they said to not worry, catching Covid will cause more harm to a baby than the vaccine. I have also watched a video on the rsog website and they say not to worry. I don’t think they would be allowed to administrate a vaccine if they aren’t sure what it could potentially do to an unborn child surely? The data would have just stayed the same as don’t allow pregnant women to have it. I just don’t think we should be worrying Grin !!! We should be enjoying the pregnancy and be glad that we are vaccinated and us and babies are slightly safer x x

ElmtreeMama · 20/06/2021 13:44

Saw baby this morning and she's doing well
I'm 17+4 now and overall pleased I've had both vaccines

Shann24 · 20/06/2021 17:01

Awww that’s amazing news, thanks for sharing! that’s reassuring for sure xxxxx

Update,

Hi all, it’s now just been I’ve a week since my second jab. I’ve had some light bleeding that started early hours this morning so have been in contact with my GP and have got a referral at the hospital (epu). My appointment is on Sunday so will keep you all updated.

LJ23 · 27/06/2021 19:48

Hi @Shann24, I hope your appointment went ok today. Sending best wishes..

Shann24 · 28/06/2021 08:15

Hi @LJ23, thank you!Flowers
I had my scan yesterday morning, it all looked ok! I am 6 weeks so very early, they could see baby briefly. I have to go back on the 12th July for another scan, she doesn’t think I should be concerned. Smile it was a massive relief, I have been working myself up for days!! x

LJ23 · 28/06/2021 08:20

@Shann24, that’s great news!! Hooray!! Must be a big relief! All the best to you

AlbiMix · 28/06/2021 08:21

Thanks everyone for your updates and glad to hear your scan went well @Shann24

I've pretty much made my decision to have the second dose now, I'm just waiting for a scan later this week and if the baby is ok I'm planning to have the vaccine next week. Feeling very nervous and hoping this is the right decision. Everyone on this thread has been really helpful in sharing your experiences, thank you!

Shann24 · 28/06/2021 08:54

Thank youHalo! I did also mention about the vaccine to the ladies at the hospital, she did say all ladies that are vaccinated have done the right thing. She told me how much worse we would be if we got Covid at a later date in pregnancy and that was enough to make me see that I made the right choice. Good luck for your second ! I had my second AZ just over a week ago and I had no symptoms x

hporter10 · 28/06/2021 10:40

This is entirely your choice. I had my first AZ vaccine before I was pregnant and second one when I was 12 weeks. I was really struggling with the decision but at the end of the day, I realised that instead of looking for research on how the vaccine effects the unborn baby (because there isn't a lot), I would look up how covid effects the unborn baby and mother. Those results were not very pleasant. So, that is how I made my decision. But remember, any decision you make is the right one as long as YOU make it
