12 week scan. Babies stomach not closed properly

I had my 12 week scan yesterday where they discovered that the baby's stomach had not closed fully and the intestines etc were still outside of the baby.
I've got to go back next week to see if it has sorted itself out. If not then I will need to see a consultant to discuss the options available.

A quick Google suggests that it could be gastroschisis or omphalocele.

Has anybody had a similar experience?

Sorry to hear this, it must be so worrying for you. I don't have any experience but just wanted to respond to bump & let you know you're in my thoughts x

No experience of a baby having it but just so you know my husband was born with gastroenteritis in the 90s when the survival rate was much lower than now. He is a healthy adult now so even if it is bad news it doesn't necessarily mean its THE worst news Flowers just take one step at a time

Sorry no experience but I think there was a lady whose baby had something similar on the first season of One Born Every Minute. From what I remember she's quite young and has got blonde hair (forgotten her name, sorry). It's still on Channel 4's on demand service if you're in the UK so it might be worth a watch for a bit more insight. All the best for you and baby x

Hello there, just chiming in to say that when I was born (in the 80s) my stomach was not closed properly. For the first year I was sick after every meal and my parents had to feed me constantly, and I was monitored by a hospital etc, but eventually the problem cleared up on it's own without surgery. I don't know if that's helpful, but I'm sure medical help for this problem has come a long way since then. Sending you good luck!

There are so many variables and you don't know all the details yet but I've seen babies in NICU successfully have their intestines etc placed back and go on to be healthy etc.

Everyone's circumstances are different.

Very stressful and I hope you get some encouraging news soon.

No experience myself but as above poster mentioned there's a great episode of OBEM, shows you him after birth, and he has an operation and all is successful. Also follows up few years later and I'll fine

Thanks so much everyone. Nice to hear that it may not be a long term health issue. Xx
