Wanted to make a thread as I’m feeling a bit anxious as I’ve just read that not drinking enough water during pregnancy can cause birth defects because there’s not enough fluid around the baby? So I’m a bit worried now as I’ve been shocking when it comes to drinking, first off I was sick in the first trimester and felt awful so hardly kept it down, I’ve gotten better in the second trimester now but there as days more often than not and I am ashamed where I probably don’t drink enough water, sometimes I forget or cause I’m so drained I’m napping sometimes and not getting enough in then, I was a really rubbish drinker before pregnancy and I’m trying my best but there are some days where I’m not having enough, I try to have at least 1.5 litres a day but I can go ages then remember I haven’t drunk so I’ll down a glass of water then instead of casually through the day on my worst days I get about a litre in. I’m 24 weeks now and I’m worried that I’ve been awful Sad

Are you drinking fluids other than water? Is your pee dark or light (sorry!)?

Puntastic · 11/05/2021 18:18

You'll be fine, OP. The body takes what it needs for the baby- it's you that suffers from any deficiencies.

I, too, am shocking for drinking in pregnancy. Two normal healthy pregnancies resulting in normal healthy births. Normal levels of amniotic fluid both times. Try and make sure you drink when you're thirsty and drink more if you're dehydrated.

@giletrouge I’m not really no :( I have a smoothie say every other day, I still now can’t really stomach stuff other than water or squash, sometimes it’s light and other times it’s dark it depends, it’s not constantly dark but like today I had to give in an urine sample and it was really dark, I’m well and truly ashamed of myself for it
@Puntastic that’s really reassuring to hear! Thank you, I just read that it causes all these birth defects because there’s not enough fluid, in the scans I’ve had so far they’ve said that the fluid looks fine and that there’s enough but is that because I just drank a bit more for the scans? And the last couple of months now there hasn’t been enough and not helped my little one in while they’re in the womb? Oh god that article has just scared me more than anything. That’s my problem I need to like stop being so busy and recognise that I am thirsty and get a drink instead of not really noticing it, I feel like an awful mother already that I haven’t given her enough water and probably dehydrated maybe more often than not.

I couldn't drink with my hyperemesis and ended up in hospital many times with severe dehydration. Normal levels of amniotic fluid around baby at 32 week scan - as PP said, the baby will take what it needs and you are the one who will suffer! I'm worried about the hit my kidneys have taken this pregnancy. I eventually landed on very weak squash which helped me increase intake but I'm still struggling now and have to force myself.

I bought a 1.5 litre bottle and I fill it with herbal tea every morning, then keep it with me while WFH - helps me drink more as it's accessible and I don't need to keep refilling.

HG same as PP and I ended up in hospital multiple times why dehydration. Both DC have the right amount of toes and fingers so no lasting damage from me puking so much. I wouldn’t worry, try to keep hydrated if you can stomach more watery foods like grapes that might be beneficial

Fluteytooting · 11/05/2021 20:57

I also had HG and ended up in hospital being rehydrated many times. They did check the fluid around the baby but it was fine. I think you’d have to be very seriously dehydrated for it to be a problem. My son was absolutely fine.
