I'm due at end of December, and planning on using Grobags.

Any recommendations on how many I should get, what tog etc?

Get two 2.5 tog ones for the winter. You may only need one if it's only for the night and you tumble dry or wash in the morning and hang on the radiator.

3Ddonut · 15/11/2007 11:49

Are they suitable from birth? I thought they were only from 6 months???

Naetha · 15/11/2007 11:51

On all the grobag websites they come in a variety of sizes, the first of which is 7lbs to 6 months, so I guess suitable from 7lbs.

Beanie (that term's not really appropriate now...marrow would be better) is measuring big for dates, so I'd imagine he'll come out close to 7lbs or more

TKMaxx have 10lb-6m ones for £10

I am stingy so used blankets till dd was 10lb as I couldn't face shelling £25 for a real Grobag

3Ddonut · 15/11/2007 11:56

we only had one grobag as they are easily washed and will go in the dryer, however, if baby will be sleeping out regualarly (when he/she is older) you may want one there so there's no disasters in forgetting one, with dd3, we had a cheaper version bought for us that worked well for a spare. They're quite expensive.

Botbot · 15/11/2007 11:59

We do that - one proper Grobag, one cheapy one as a spare (Sainsbury's ones were good).

PrettyCandles · 15/11/2007 12:00

Get two - I've lost count the number of times the LO has puked in the night, or the nappy has leaked.

I geanrerally swaddled the babies until they had straightened out a bit, so used bags from 1month or so.

I prefer lightweight ones. 1-.5 tog, as you don't then need anotrher set for the summer. You can always layer extra clothes on the baby, or a cardie over the bag, or a blanket or two, if needed.

PuppyDogTails · 15/11/2007 12:01

Our house is really warm so I just use 1 tog ones. DS goes in a towelling sleepsuit if it's looking like a cold night.

spugs · 15/11/2007 13:31

i had two, a gro bag someone bought for me as well as a cheap one from matalan. there both 2.5 togs for winter. have a lovely 1 tog one from boots for the summer

madmouse · 15/11/2007 13:41

I got one lovely one from eBay looking new for about 8 quid including p&p (real grobag) and one I fell in love with in Holland (prenatal) with Miffy on, which due to exchange rate was about 13 quid. 2.5 tog both of them, I am due end of January and babe will have grown lots before it is hot enough for a one tog one, especially with his mummy lurving open windows . My mates advised me to have two as babies always puke etc.

Naetha · 15/11/2007 14:58

I've specifically requested a non-puking baby variety...if turns out he does puke, can I exchange him?

MrsBadger · 15/11/2007 15:03

oh yes
that's what all those rooms labelled 'baby change' are for

claireybraxtonhicks · 15/11/2007 15:13

I had 4 for dd-was given a m&p one and then they were buy 2 get one free in matalan so I did that!
Most of the time I did have too many but there were a couple of times where she was ill/had a leaky nappy etc and needed changing in the middle of the night and especially if one was already waiting to be washed it helped having more.
One night she had a bug and was sick down all of them in succession but that was particularly unlucky!

claireybraxtonhicks · 15/11/2007 15:14

Oh and the cheapo ones are just as good! Have proper grobag for her now and its no different to the others really

sabinar · 15/11/2007 16:00

lol @ MrsBadger

PrettyCandles · 15/11/2007 18:35

Yes, Naetha, you can. But you have to send him back through the same channels.

ayrshirelolo · 15/11/2007 22:33

Hiya! dd has slept in one since she was about 6 weeks old (she was little.. only 6lb2oz at birth, took her 6 weeks to put on the beef!) and we have 2 or 3, but use the cheapy Tesco ones. (i think one of them was half price in Mothercare's sale) They are aboout 2 or 2.5 tog, she sleeps in a sleepsuit but not a vest. Will buy the next size up for summer weight though, 1 tog.
She still likes a blanket for naps though!!
Fab invention, she moves around A LOT during the night and if she does wake up it's not because she's cold!
Oh yeah, Naetha, as PC says, what comes down must go up??? and you need to have kept the receipt!!

SpeccieSeccie · 15/11/2007 22:36

Grobags are brilliant. I've found that 2 isn't quite enough though so would recommend going for 3 if you can so if the laundry is stacking up you don't need to worry. If you don't mind getting them second hand, they're usually available at NCT sales.

threestars · 15/11/2007 22:40

Oooh, definitely a low tog one. My son used to have one (we called it his 'ghost outfit' and every time my DH saw him in it he'd be in hysterics) and would wake up all sweaty. Mind you even now aged 3, with his light tog duvet, he has to sleep starkers or he'll get too hot...

threestars · 15/11/2007 22:41

...and his room is the coldest in the house.

GodzillasBumcheek · 15/11/2007 23:01

I have tried a proper grobag and the material where the poppers were attatched tore. The two cheaper ones i have tried i had no probs with. I am currently using one from ASDA, which was only a tenner, and so far have only needed the one - this winter. Last winter i needed two cos she tended to puke in the middle of the night. If you have no tumble dryer then you'll need two or lo will get stinky

Depending on how much heating you have on, if you have a wriggling baby and rooms where your nursery thermometer is showing 'too cold', you'll need 2.5 togs plus cardigan, plus blanket(s). Unfortunately this is how my house gets!

nappyaddict · 15/11/2007 23:23

i've got some for sale on here if you are interested.

Pk616 · 17/11/2007 08:26

We're strapped for cash so my mother is knitting one!

Bless her, but she's nuts!

Divvy · 17/11/2007 08:36

I think they are brillant! Not sure they were "invented" when I had my first, but they are a god-send for 8 month old baby that moves about alot in there sleep!

Divvy · 17/11/2007 08:37

rofl @ knitting one!
