Eat frozen fruit straight from bag?

I’ve been making smoothies with frozen mango and pineapple but I’ve been putting the fruit straight from the bag straight into the blender frozen, I’ve been having a smoothie now every day for about 6 weeks, my new craving I can’t get enough of them lol.
But I’ve read the bag today and it says to defrost 6-8 in the fridge then eat within 24 hours, do I need to defrost them or are they okay to blend straight from frozen? Is there anything harmful in them while they’re frozen? I’m just over 20 weeks pregnant and worried that maybe I’ve been exposing my baby to something harmful? I can’t really see anything on the internet so wanted to ask here, TIA!

It's absolutely fine OP, I've always blended the fruit frozen both before and during my pregnancy. Tastes so much better!

I would only ever defrost them if I was putting them in cereal etc just for the taste. Can't beat an ice cold smoothie 😁

Totally fine, frozen makes the best smoothies anyway!

Pro tip: you know the myth about eating pineapples to softn your cervix nearer the time? Apparently its the woody, hard inner bit of a fresh pineapple. Not pleasant to eat, but it goes great in a smoothie!

It’s fine, they’re perfectly safe to eat frozen, it’s just that most people prefer to defrost them before use. I’ve eaten handfuls of frozen blueberries throughout my pregnancies and all fine.

So long as it says ready to eat on the bag it's fine. No need to defrost either.

I love eating frozen fruit before it's fully defrosted, I don't blend fruit at all.

Thank you everyone, I wasn’t too sure plus it’s been everyday now for since about 14 weeks because it’s all I really want all the time haha!
@Chelyanne ahh it doesn’t say that on the bag Sad it just says in the bag defrost 6-8 hours and then eat within 24 hours then, bit worried now! I do eat whole fresh food but when I’m craving a smoothie it’s so much easier to chuck them in the blender! Maybe I’ll have to get more fresh fruit then and cut them up ready instead

It's fine. There could be nothing harmful in there that would be killed by defrosting for a few hours.

I wouldn't worry if they don't use those exact words. Some just have "simply defrost and eat as a snack" in serving suggestions. Just means it'll have been washed prior to freezing so safe to eat without washing, most fresh you'll have to wash but you can bulk buy and fast freeze those yourself for later use.

Ooh I am intrigued by this! At the moment I'm finding that whatever I ate yesterday absolutely revolts me today (thanks pregnancy hormones) but the idea of having various frozen fruits I can pick at currently sounds really good to me. Ginger biscuits are doing nothing for my nausea - too sweet. Crackers also initially helped but I find them too bland now. Coldness and saltiness are in favour today. Off to make smoothies and eat S&V chipsticks Confused

I wondered this exact thing a few weeks back. I’d been doing the same thing... putting into a smoothie or straight into my porridge and microwaving with the porridge. I stopped doing it but some frozen fruit bags do say on them that you can put straight into a blender for a smoothie so I’m sure it’s fine! How could some be ok and not others (and it was the same fruits but just different brands). I think it must just say it on the bag as a guide on how to defrost them rather than the fact you have to defrost them for safety reasons. Buttt why don’t you try and find some which say you can put straight into a smoothie just to make you feel better?

Alwayshappier · 09/05/2021 14:07

Thank you everyone, I’m still on the fence with it, yeah there can’t be any anything in them while frozen that would be killed off by defrosting them! Yeah I’ve seen the ready to make smoothie mixes! But the tropical fruits is what I’m craving like mango pineapple and the only one in Asda that’s says ready to use has papaya in it and I don’t like it plus I’ve read somewhere not to eat papaya, I go off the NHS but reading that put me off eating it lol
Yeah it says it’s a guide it doesn’t say I have to defrost it but I’m having them everyday at the moment and just wondering if that’s bad, honestly I can’t get enough of them Sad

Photo of the guidance it gives, nothing says safe to eat straight out the bag but also doesn’t say it has to be defrosted to eat either, all a bit confusing!
I wouldn’t usually be worried but I’ve had one every day for maybe 4-6 weeks now!

It's fine.

It would be different if it was something like frozen chicken nuggets which say they need to be cooked before eating. Those night contain raw chicken. Raw fruits firstly aren't a problem to eat but even if they were, it says to defrost first, not to cook first.

Defrosting is always just for taste purposes. If it tastes fine to you frozen then carry on!

Peaplant20 · 09/05/2021 14:20

I think you’re fine. I’m no expert and someone will probably correct me but I think the only type of food poisoning that you can get without being ill yourself is toxoplasmosis and I’m pretty sure that gets destroyed by freezing hence pregnant women can eat raw fish (sushi etc) if it’s been frozen first x

Peaplant20 · 09/05/2021 14:21

(So you’d know if it was harmful as you’d have gotten ill!)

jupitermars1345 · 09/05/2021 14:27

Its absolutely fine :)
