Hi all, wondering if anyone else has hypothyroidism and is pregnant ?

I found out very recently I am 4+1 weeks pregnant (nhs calculator) and have had 3x strong positive tests
I have no symptoms except a little tiredness and some groin and lower back ache

I take 75mg thyroxine a day since I was 25 and I am 30 now, I am planning to contact GP on Monday to ask if I need to up my dose

Does anyone have any experience of this??

Thanks x

I had to up my dose by 50% for each pregnancy. Contact your GP ASAP as they will likely want to increase your dose. Congratulations!

Thank you! I’m thinking of taking 100mg today and tomorrow until I get it confirmed by the GP, ‘split the difference’ 😆, do you think this is a good idea?

Did you have very regular bloods when you were pregnant to test your thyroid levels ??

This is me too! Although no one seems to give a shit and I had a second trimester miscarriage last year and it was the only pregnancy I had since the diagnosis....!
Had my booking in app and they said they would do bloods at 12 weeks and I’d be under a consultant but not much more than that. I have an appointment coming up to be weighed and measured so I may mention it again there. Currently taking 75mg. Consultant brushed off all my concerns last time and said it wasn’t a huge concern so hope that’s still the case...!

Hi @Blueeyedgirl21.

I am 22 weeks pregnant and have hypothyroidism. Diagnosed at 26 years of age and am now 39. I take 100mcg thyroxine every day.

I told my midwife I had hypothyroidism at my booking appointment. I had a blood test just for my Thyroid at 13 weeks at my consultant appointment and my dose was not changed. Consultant said I'll have another blood test at 26 weeks and another in the 3rd trimester.

This is just my experience but no change for me so far! Next blood test in 4 weeks x

Thank you! I’m okay, just worried my lazy thyroid may have caused me some problems. Hopefully better luck this time! 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I fell pregnant 4 years after diagnosis (and totally shocked as I was diagnosed with PCOS at the same time).
I can't remember if my dose was increased,I was already on 125mcg.
All was fine, but they did test DS after birth, results were fine.
Had DD 3 years later, again no problems and they did not test her this time.

Congratulations I would speak to gp now, before booking, and ask to get regular bloods and/or your dose reviewed. I had my bloods done every 4 weeks initially and referred to endocrine consultant to review. In the end my dose didn't actually need to be increased but apparently usual practice is to increase it.

Mylasmummy2102 · 08/05/2021 19:54

I have it basically I just have blood test every 4 weeks and then my consultant will check them and If they need upping they do I'm now on 150mg a day started off at 50 they told me it gets increased by 25mg as soon as your pregnant to make sure your levels are okay xx

Dothepropeller21 · 08/05/2021 19:56

Hi op, also another that wasn't tested until booking in bloods and TSH was under 2.5 so no increase required. Personally I'd wait to get advise from GP or midwife before changing your medication. I had another blood test 6 weeks later and TSH was above 2.5 so my dose was increased by 25mcg. I'm also consultant led for other reasons and my consultant agreed with this approach by the midwife. Bloods are due to be rechecked 4 weeks after an increase and 8 weeks later if no increase required at previous appointment. I think the advice varies lots between trusts.
Congrats on the pregnancy!

Mine was upped during both pregnancies after blood tests. I think it was 25mg or so.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 10/05/2021 13:40

Just an update, spoke to the gp today who was absolutely lovely and she said don’t touch the dose, come in this week for a blood test and we will go from there! She said it may go up and down as things progress and to take folic acid etc
