Has anyone ever had blood test to find out gender?

I know you can find out the baby’s gender from a NIPT test but I was looking online last night and found a few companies that can tell gender from 8 weeks by doing a blood test

They look for foetal dna in Mum’s blood

Has anyone done this? It says 99.1% accurate

I haven't done it. I read about them though and I think it's only so accurate if the sample is uncontaminated which if you do it at home and home is somewhere where men live as well can be really hard to do.

I've done it but only found out the sex because they offer it, I was more interested in the risk for trisomies. I had the harmony test and had a scan and gave blood at 10+2 and got the results by email 10 days later and then had a 12 week 2 day scan too.

My friends did Sneakpeek. It used to have quite a dodgy reputation but I believe that they have increased the amount of foetal DNA that they look for now, so there are less incorrect results. They were in the AMJ a while ago.

Anyway, I know 8 people who've taken it over the last two years, and they've all got the right result. You are supposed to sanitise the area that you do the test in, especially if you live with males, and you need to be careful that you've cleaned your hand and nobody touches the test kit.

It basically just looks for male DNA, so if you contaminate the test, it'll show incorrectly.

You can also do a clinical test at some clinics, I believe, where a phlebotomist does the draw for you; or you can do medical tests like NIPT or Harmony.

My friend had it done via the Harmony test at a clinic on Harley St and as far as I know they really are meant to be 99%. I would however have it done by a clinic and not at home in case you contaminate it!

Chanel05 · 10/05/2021 16:15

Yep I did the SneakPeek but I had blood taken at a clinic by a phlebotomist and it was accurate for me as it was a true blood test. I paid for it to be done at 10 weeks. If you do it at home the odds of accuracy are slashed massively.

There's no known blood test for gender; you have to wait until your child is old enough to understand the concept, have a good think about it and tell you. Btmy that time it's likely there will be thousands of gender to pick from or we may be back to just two.

Sex, now, that's another matter! 😉

AprilFoolaround · 10/05/2021 16:29

Gosh, wouldn't it be great if we could get the troubled youth a blood test to establish their gender and stop all the handwringing about it. I suspect however that they'd only get to know their sex though seeing as blood tests don't deal with feelings, only facts.

😂

allfurcoatnoknickers · 10/05/2021 18:23

DH is Ashkenazi Jewish, so we did genetic testing at 11/12 weeks and found out the sex as an extra. I had it done at a clinic.

Pricy, but better than spending money on nub experts etc. if you really want to know. I like to pop up on nub theory etc. threads yelling "Get the blood test!".

TravelDreamLife · 12/05/2021 05:43

I had the Harmony test. They offered to tell me the sex so I said yes. They were correct.

Warrickdaviesasplates · 12/05/2021 06:06

Unless there's a medical need to find out the sex that early wouldn't it be better to wait until the 20 week anomaly scan and find out then? Or even have a private scan at 16 weeks if you're desperate.

If the chances of accuracy are reduced by potential contamination and it's done at home wouldn't it be better to save the money?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 12/05/2021 09:36

@Warrickdaviesasplates Maybe. I think the fact that it’s like £60, so comparable to a private scan but can tell you from 8 weeks, is probably the draw. You don’t seem to see many people talking about doing it over 12 weeks, so I suspect it’s a good distraction in those early, scary days; and that people confirm with a scan anyway.
