Did doctor miss cleft lip on 25 week scan?

Hi all - I went for a private anomaly scan at 25 weeks mainly to confirm if my placenta was starting to shift upwards as it was very low lying at my 20 week scan. All looks good with placenta and the doctor spent a good 2 hours looking at every element of the baby - she showed us a few 3D images (which I wasn’t expecting) and while I think baby looks super cute, I’m also panicking that he looks like he has cleft lip in one image. From another angle all looks ok. What do you think? Any thoughts?

Why don’t you just ask them ! None of us are 3D uss experts 😂

Hi, I am not a specialist in sonography but my son was born with a cleft lip and palate and my ultrasound pictures clearly showed the cleft lip. To me that just looks like a shadowing.
Hope the pregnancy goes well and congratulations Daffodil

Surely the doctor who spent 2 hours looking at the scan would have mentioned something if there was an issue?

ohgenome · 07/05/2021 22:18

Two hour consultation and you didn't ask them?
OP - all will be fine; try and relax and don't overthink this

Guavafish · 07/05/2021 22:26

Contact your doctor if your worried. Get them to explain the same results again

alaska748 · 07/05/2021 22:26

Thanks all I know I am likely overthinking and panicking - I didn’t take a proper look at the photos until I got home but you are right, doctor will have spotted if anything wasn’t as it should be.

@anji82 thanks so much for your comment and hope all is now ok with your son x

It’s one of the things they look for so I’d be surprised if a highly skilled, trained professional who does this day in, day out had missed it, especially after scanning for so long.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 08/05/2021 06:03

If all I had to go on were those 2 photos (no such thing when ds was born) I'd be worried about the entire side of his head being mis-shaped/missing never mind the lip!

After 2 hours at a private scan and your regular 20 week scan I'd not be concerned at all - they can find the tiniest problem from these scans which to me look like reading cloud formations or tea leaves! And they wouldn't be giving you a pic showing something was wrong without telling you and setting up some sort of referral.

I'm sure all is fine op

Soubriquet · 08/05/2021 06:20

I can see why you’re worried as that first picture does give the sense that baby has a cleft lip, but I would have thought that the doctors would have picked it up if you could see it easily

Mention it at your next midwife appointment if you’re still concerned

AlwaysLatte · 08/05/2021 06:50

They would 100% have told you if he did. But just from looking at the pictures, what you are referring to as the 'cleft' is in different places on the two pictures. On the first picture it goes up to the left side of the nostril and on the second it goes to to the right side. It certainly can't move! So I would think that perhaps the baby moving their mouth had caused a glitch.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 08/05/2021 06:54

anyone else hate the 4D images? At the couple of private scans I’ve had they’ve said ‘now let’s see it in 4D!’ excitedly and I hate it! Creepy and horrible, I’m more than happy with just the basic image. And now look at Joe much unnecessary and unfounded worry it’s caused you OP.

Thesnakeminder · 08/05/2021 06:56

Normal 2D scans are better at looking for cleft lip, 3D isn’t a true image and shadowing, movement etc can impede the image.
I’m rather shocked that a Dr scanned for two hours- that is strictly against safety guidelines.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 08/05/2021 06:57

Sorry, I meant 3D images. God only knows what 4D would look like Shock

arcof · 08/05/2021 07:07

What's with all these private scans? If your placenta was low and it was a concern, wouldn't the NHS have called you back for a check up? And surely 2 hours of ultrasound is not ideal? In US where you pay for your care, so it's all "private", they try not to scan you more than twice in a normal pregnancy.
And OP I'm sure you have nothing to worry about

SmidgenofaPigeon · 08/05/2021 07:12

@Thesnakeminder I’ve had private scans because, up until very recently, DH was not allowed in the NHS ones, and it was our choice to have one where he could attend as it was important to us. Plus I wanted his support incase there was a problem having had a previous miscarriage. It’s not always for fanciful reasons, although I won’t be doing anymore as it’s not necessary at this point and I’m not a big fan of the scan place because they try and flog you things like a teddy bear with a heartbeat in it which makes me cringe, but the sonographers do know what they’re doing.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 08/05/2021 07:12

Apologies as that was intended at @arcof.

Marypoppins19 · 08/05/2021 07:17

Even if he did have a cleft, with support with feeding and care he would do really well.
