Are you guys taking the vaccine while pregnant? I'm very uncertain about it and I think I should wait?....

I was booked in for my vaccine when I was around 8 weeks but decided to cancel and I'm now deciding whether to get it in second trimester or put it off until after birth.
I am not high risk, generally healthy and I WFH, all others around me would have been vaccinated and all my close family are regularly tested as they work within NHS.

I always thought that Pfizer and Mederna were safe in pregnancy however my partner had his vaccine and brought home the supporting leaflets they gave him and the info in there advises against all pregnant women getting the vaccine unless in a high risk job setting or vulnerable so I'm also feeling quite mixed

I never knew they gave out leaflets, my dp has his next week. I'll get him to bring these home. Would be good to have these in advance.
PinkPlantCase · 08/06/2021 09:05

By the leaflets do you mean the insert that comes with the vaccine that says the ingredients and side effects etc? Because these would have been produced probably well before it was approved for pregnant women.

Either way because they can’t run trials on pregnant women when they first test the vaccine (before it’s released for general use) the drugs company will never say that it is 100% safe for use during pregnancy, it’s the same for almost any type of medication. There can be years of data that show no ill effects during pregnancy but the drugs company still can’t recommend it for use during pregnancy.

Got mine on Sunday - no side effects other than the arm pain which is now gone too. I consider myself lucky, it's not like that for everyone and you can't know what group you'll be in.

The NHS website is super unhelpful for pregnant women - no way to know what vaccine you'll be getting. I booked anyways and then I called my GP to tell them about it. They just knew that the vaccination centre I had booked (Guy's hospital in London for any of you who live here) only gives Pfizer so I was safe. The way I see it - the risks to the baby if I get sick are higher than any known risks from the vaccine. Also, the Pfizer one isn't a live vaccine - no active virus in it, and there's nothing else in it that should/can even get through the placenta. So I'm betting on the vaccine. Finally, 90,000 women in the US have been vaccinated and are apparently fine so it's not like you're shooting in the dark if you go for it. But I can't judge anyone - your body, your choice.

@BeeP21 100% agree NHS very unhelpful in this matter!

I’m booked in for 2 weeks time so have some time to think about it but very much leaning towards doing it despite what my midwife said...

Soverymuchfruit · 08/06/2021 09:40

Counterpoint to the links folks have shared about (low) vaccine risks, here's info on the (high) risks from covid itself:
www.ox.ac.uk/news/2021-04-23-research-uncovers-high-risk-pregnant-women-covid-19

I'm v pro vaccine myself, though I was advised to wait til 12 weeks (so booked for the day after my scan). Not sure if waiting for 12 weeks was necessary as lots of others have had different advice.

AlZi · 08/06/2021 10:22

@Soverymuchfruit thanks!

I have a lot of love for the NHS in general but the part of it related to pregnancy is increasingly getting on my nerves. I don't like a lot of their advice because I'm getting the feeling it's not always objective.
I'm lucky to be covered by insurance so my pregnancy care is all private. My doctor told me to get the vaccine as soon as I can and not hesitate. I think GPs and midwives don't want to say that as a way of protecting themselves in case something happens (fair enough). But I've also noticed a lot of other differences in advice, like for c-sections or breastfeeding, for example. I don't want to stray from the topic, just saying that while I would follow medical advice vs rumours or other opinions on any day, I am taking anything coming from a midwife with a pinch of salt.

On a side note, I see why women would hesitate to vaccinate before 12 weeks. I imagine if a miscarriage happens (and I've been through one, it's horrible) you usually don't know why it happened so if you did take the vaccine, you'll always wonder - was it that, was it the sip of wine last Thursday, was it that I jumped or bent too much, etc.

Yes I had mine last week at 37 weeks pregnant. I am under the Portland hospital in London. My consultant looked at me like I was crazy when I asked should I get it?! She was EXTREMELY supportive of me doing so. Apparently the risks of a pregnant woman catching Covid and going into intensive care during her 3rd trimester are frightfully high. But obviously each to their own! I felt absolutely fine and the baby has continued as normal in my belly :)

osmo18 · 08/06/2021 14:42

@PinkPlantCase no not the insert it was an information booklet. About 15 pages long, (in Welsh and English)
He was given an ingredients page, a leaflet on the vaccine and another leaflet on staying safe in covid.

I do think these may have been printed before the guidance changed however it is confusing that they would still be handing them out with outdated information

I am going to try and get mine booked in when I'm around 14+

3ormoredogs · 08/06/2021 14:46

I’ve also been called today and have booked for next week but I’m really on the fence!

The rational part of my brain knows it’s safe but the odd horror story is making me worried sick. I’ll be 23 weeks on the day of the vac!
I work client facing so I really do need to get it dont I?

Soverymuchfruit · 08/06/2021 14:54

@3ormoredogs maybe read the link I posted above on the risks on the other side? Good luck.

Ah! Same hospital! Same consultant reaction! :) You're due soon so the best of luck! I'm hoping you'll be visiting here after the happy arrival to give some feedback on how the Portland was.

Had the Moderna vaccine on Monday (week 33). All went well, only side effect was a sore arm (still a bit tender actually).

Glad I did it!

This forum helped a lot Smile

Peachi82 · 24/06/2021 07:49

I had my first Moderna when I wasn't pregnant and I'm due my second when I should be 8 weeks. There is no reason not to go ahead is there?
I had a miscarriage earlier this year at 10 weeks (blighted ovum).

Soverymuchfruit · 24/06/2021 09:27

@Peachi82 might be worth trying to have a word with midwife / GP, as I was advised not to be jabbed in the first trimester. Though that's probably an extra caution thing. I think others have had it then and been fine.

Peachi82 · 24/06/2021 13:31

Soverymuchfruit

Thank you. I have an early scan scheduled for next week, all looking well, I'll ask my GP what they advise doing.

I had a Google search before looking for advise during the first trimester but couldn't really find anything that differences between early and late pregnancy.

Currently a normal nursery bug has floored me, so I'm really not keen on having Covid during pregnancy (or at all).

Soverymuchfruit · 24/06/2021 14:27

I actually had mine when they'd only just approved it for pregnant women (I'm old!). So they were probably playing it very safe while waiting for more guidance.

Kooooie1 · 08/08/2021 19:29

@RLou3
Hi,

I am unsure about getting vaccine, can I ask if everything was okay with baby as I cannot find any babies that were born post vaccine

Thank you

RLou3 · 08/08/2021 19:39

Hey @Kooooie1 !! Absolutely fine!!! She's now 6 weeks old and absolutely thriving! I am SO glad that I got the vaccine when I did (approx 37 weeks pregnant) I had my second a couple of weeks ago and I'm Breastfeeding! Please do not worry! As I said before.. my consultant looked at me as if I was crazy when I said I was worried! The risks for pregnant women who contract Covid - without a vaccine are frightful! The US have been doing a study on pregnant woman getting the vaccine and following the babies from Birth... so far everything is absolutely normal!! Xxxx

Kooooie1 · 08/08/2021 20:36

@RLou3

That is amazing to hear and so reassuring, I am glad she is perfectly fine.
I have been sitting on the fence for quite some time but I am getting close to my due date and totally living in fear of contracting covid.
I just needed to hear that babies were fine post vaccines.

Thank you so much for putting my mind at ease, I have booked in for tomorrow :-) xx
