Milk three days after opening?

Does anyone actually manage to drink their milk within three days of opening? Wondering how strict I need to be now I'm pregnant in reading food safety on packaging?

Is the concern here listeria? Or just freshness? I didn't think anything of it but now regretting that.. Confused

Buy filtered milk, it lasts for 7 days.

I just go by the date / smell 🤣

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 06/05/2021 15:16

Have you ever got food poisoning from milk?

Just smell it. And if something tastes funny, dont eat or drink it.

I didn’t even know this was a thing. Off milk stinks so I know it’s bad 🤷🏻‍♀️

@MikeWozniaksGloriousTache I didn't really notice it before but went to put milk in my online shopping basket and there was a big '+3' next to it and then I read 'consume within three days'. My milk usually lasts a full week in the house.. ConfusedHmm

One week here too! I wouldn't drink it if it smelt, tasted bad but with all honesty, I've never even noticed the 3 days thing. Oops!

ellenpartridge · 06/05/2021 16:03

Why don't you just buy smaller bottles of milk?

FeistySheep · 06/05/2021 16:10

The vast majority of fresh food will say within 2 days/ 3 days, but usually they are just covering their backs. For most food, you can tell by sight and smell whether it's okay (one exception which comes to mind is chilled meat). Milk and cream is the easiest thing ever to sniff - you KNOW when it's off! It goes stinky long before it goes mouldy. Milk often lasts a week in our house. I never even look at dates, just sniff.

Dates are not that useful for some things. If I stuck to dates completely, I would have eaten that foul-smelling haddock I opened the other day, with two days still left before its use by date. Eww! Much better to use your nose.

Thanks @FeistySheep! Only since becoming pregnant have I paid attention to this and found my anxiety levels sky rocketing!

I just smell test everything, pregnancy or no pregnancy. You'll know if you shouldn't be using it, rancid milk is horrific.

@lamptastic thanks! Guess I'm just freaked out that I could catch listeria from the sniff test in case it's whiffing around in the milk!
