How bad should morning sickness get until you seek medical help?

I'm 7 weeks and have unbearable nausea constantly all day. I'm vomiting at least a couple times throughout the day and my throat is starting to burn from the acid. I'm quite apprehensive about leaving the house much as I hate throwing up in public. All the tricks like ginger, nausea wrist bands, dry crackers don't really do anything. What I'm not sure about is at what point is it considered bad enough to seek medical help? I know it's part of pregnancy so I'm not sure if this is what it is, or if I have a particularly bad case of it!

If you're struggling it's time to ask for help. Don't be scared to.

I was being sick 30 times in 24 hours before I sought help, it could have been managed more easily if I hadnt let it get that bad.

Hope you're feeling better soon.

Girlmama3 · 05/05/2021 11:14

I would seek advice. Dehydration is a concern if you're being sick that much.

Hopefully you can have something prescribed to make you feel better x

If your struggling to keep fluids down id ask for help, I've had HG 3 times I began antisickness at 6 weeks in each pregnancy.
It's really hard but the antisickness is worth it I've been quite lucky my 2 last pregnancies with HG it was pretty much gone by 24 weeks.

Definitely talk to your GP. They can prescribe you something to help with that.

BikeRunSki · 05/05/2021 11:25

Seek advice - GP, midwife, A&E.
you could have hyperemisis gravidarum.
It floored me for my first and second trimesters in both pgs.
You want to avoid dehydration if possible, and there are anti sickness medications available.
At my worst, I let ice cubes melt in my mouth.

Pregnancy Sickness Support. PSS can give invaluable practical, emotional, legal and medical advice.

Rest as much as you need. If you are working you need to know that, by law in the UK, pregnancy related sick leave from work must be recorded separately from ordinary sick leave and can not be used against you.

I'd seek help now op. I was hospitalised at 11 weeks due to dehydration so best to ensure medical professionals are aware

Call you midwife take her a urine sample in, im 13+5 and suffering with hyperemasis! I was in hospital for 2 days last week from being dehydrated and out in IV fluids and sent home with 3 different kinds of anti sickness! They’ve stopped the nausea but still no appetite so I’m still not eating :( I was lucky with my first it went away at 14 weeks so I’m crossing my whole body this time.. won’t sit and suffer I did until last weekend I wouldn’t again xx

shivawn · 05/05/2021 12:29

How long have you been dealing with the vomiting? I was vomiting a couple times a day around the 7 week mark but thankfully it only lasted 3 or 4 days before it passed. Hope things get better for you soon xx

Marnie1234 · 05/05/2021 13:33

Iv been vomiting every morning since like 9 week, and I still vomit in a morning now if I don’t take my meds early enough, and I’m usually sick when my stomach is empty but because I’ve no appetite its always empty I can’t enjoy my pregnancy at all yet It’s so depressing crossing my fingers for the next few week tho for some energy and some apetite I can cope with vomiting in a morning I just want to feel hungry again :( xx

I'm not medical but I googled when I had morning sickness and found the PUQE score which reassured me I deserved medical help, looking at this you would at least be offered medication. www.rotherhamccg.nhs.uk/Downloads/Top%20Tips%20and%20Therapeutic%20Guidelines/Therapeutic%20guidelines/PUQE%20INDEX%20ASSESSMENT%20new.pdf

To all the vomiting, pregnant ladies on this thread - I really feel for you. I have been there twice, and it is grim. The grimness is worsened by the feeling that you are meant to glow with health in pregnancy! My youngest is 9, and I still get flashbacks!

Please seek medical help, get signed off rest, and accept hospitalisation if it comes to that, if you can. I appreciate that Covid restrictions, and the Covid impact on incomes, will make grandparents and extra nursery sessions less accessible than when I was in your position 9 years ago. Please have a look at the Pregnancy Sickness Support website. I do hope that this horrible phase passes quickly for you. For me or was 18 weeks, and it was like the sickness had been completely switched off.

MAMA0814 · 16/05/2021 17:23

Hi, just wondering how your feeling I’m in the same boat 7 weeks for me at the minute feeling very rough and don’t know how I’m going to make it in work tomorrow!! Xx

Ednadidit · 16/05/2021 19:19

I’d say if you’re thinking about calling the doctor then it’s time to call the doctor for a same day appt. I called when I was suffering from terrible nausea and vomiting in the morning and then the next day my HG absolutely kicked off. Hopefully you won’t be as unlucky as me! Best of luck 🤞🏻

NinaMimi · 16/05/2021 20:36

I agree with others that you should seek medical attention. It’s sad that women suffer because it’s seen as something to bare.

bananabread2000 · 17/05/2021 01:23

My GP told me that if it's affecting your ability to function properly through your day e.g. working, looking after family etc then you should definitely ask for help. There are plenty of options to try which are well tested and pregnancy safe so there is no need to suffer. Having said that I am currently 10.5 weeks and have severe sickness - the meds don't do much for me and I can't take the "good stuff" (zofran) because of some other medications I take, so I feel for you, constant nausea and sickness is just miserable.

wednesadaayaddams · 17/05/2021 01:40

I think everyone has different tolerance levels, different jobs/responsibilities and therefore different energy levels necessary to be able to function and carry out work/tasks etc.

Being sick a couple of times a day doesn't found a lot but if is affecting you to the point you can't function properly you should ask for help managing it.

In both pregnancies I was sick almost hourly throughout the night then spent the day absolutely exhausted and nauseous, and being sick every few hours. I found in my first pregnancy I put up with it for longer because I could take sick days abs rest, but the second time I couldn't even look after myself never mind daughter it was hell!

gizmo167 · 17/05/2021 10:20

I am 7wk6d and suffering terribly since 5 weeks! I rang GP last week as really struggling with work, had to get urine and bloods tested to check for dehydration/sodium levels but as they came back ok they wouldnt prescribe me anything! Really hoping it settles quickly!!

Flutterby8 · 17/05/2021 11:10

I dont have anything helpful to add sadly, except I feel your pain.
11 weeks here and been suffering with constant nausea, sickness and zero appetite for about 6 weeks. Ive also lost over a stone in weight now.
I cant remember the last time I was able to eat a meal like a normal human without wanting to be sick half way through.
I have been wondering whether it is normal or if I am being dramatic and just not coping well.
This morning I woke up and vomited as soon as I lifted my head off the pillow. I havent eaten or drunk anything for more than 15hours.
Ive put a request through to my GP today for a consult for meds so will have to see what happens.
Ive already discussed this with my midwife who basically shrugged and saidbit was fine as I had the weight to lose (BMI of 30).
Its such a horrible, relentless feeling.
