AstraZeneca in pregnancy

I've just had a positive pregnancy test and I had the astrazeneca vaccine 2 weeks ago. I had no idea I could have been pregnant and now I'm panicking.

Hi, I had the AZ vaccine early on in my pregnancy before knowing I was pregnant. Scans at 12 weeks and recently 16 weeks show baby is fine. RCOG recommends Pfizer and Moderna because they have data on use in pregnant women - AZ doesn’t but this doesn’t mean it’s unsafe, just that they don’t have the data. Also there’s the blood clot risk to the mother but that’s very very rare. I’m going to have second AZ dose soon (I did um and ah but I’ve got an underlying condition that could make it bad for me and baby if I were to catch covid)!

Thank you @PepS123. Glad your baby is fine.

How are you and baby doing now? Been debating going to get it.

@Mimi2022 and also @ilovemykids5

I’ve had both my AZ jabs during my pregnancy, the first at around 19 weeks and the second one about 8 weeks later. All my scans have ok and baby seems active and healthy so far.

It was quite nerve wracking to get it and I did have to think about it at lot but I’m very happy I’ve had it now, especially with being high risk from 28 weeks onward.

I’ve had both AZ jabs during my pregnancy. My baby is totally fine. There’s nothing to worry about in your case whatsoever. The advice to have Pfizer or Moderna is a precaution as we have more data on outcomes in pregnancy in comparison to AZ - there’s nothing that suggests there is any issue at all with AZ though. The risk of blood clots is tiny and if you don’t get a blood clot with the first dose then you won’t with the second. The only thing to consider in your case is you may want to wait until the second trimester before getting your second dose - the reason for this is that you may get a fever as a side effect of the vaccine, and ideally it’s best to try to avoid a fever in the first trimester. But that’s the only thing.

I work in a hospital in Oxford and lots of nurses were given AZ before they knew they were pregnant and both mother and baby have been fine so unofficially and theoretically we can’t see any reason why the vaccine would be unsafe and you are encouraged to get other vaccines like whooping cough in pregnancy but the official positive safety data available to date from the USA has been conducted using Pfizer and Moderna.

Are we still able to get the AZ vaccine? I still think I prefer this one even though I’m below 30. Do you know of any vaccines pre covid that used mRNA?
