Glucose test - am I supposed to fast beforehand?

Just spoke to a rude hospital receptionist who has caused my blood pressure to rise. Anyway, supposed to have a glucose tolerance test asap - am 29 weeks and out of sync with my appointments apparently. She told me to drink 280ml of Lucozade at home then come straight into hospital as the blood? test needs to be done exacty an hour later. She said I don't have to fast at all. Is that right?

Also, this is my third preg, no problems at all and never had a GTT before. Why do I need one? NO sugar in my wee ever. No big babies.

I can't believe they'd trust the results of a test where you drink the liquid at home.Anyway, I've always had to fast for 12 hours before (allowed black coffee though!), had blood/urine samples in the hospital, drank the glucose liquid, waited, then more blood/urine samples.

I'm also surprised they're telling you to have one when there's no reason. Personally, I'd refuse but I'm cantankerous when it comes to things that need me to go for a hospital appointment!.

I am ancient though at 38 - could that be the reason? She said it wasn't but I didn't trust her! She implied I could go straight home after the test. It all seems very unlikely.

I don't want to have it either, don't really see the need.

Checked on previous threads and people always seem to fast. Confused now but don't want to call the b*ch back.

Just don't go They can't make you.

I was ancient when I had BabyDragon and had previous huuuge baby (DS1) plus failed GTT (DS2) and I still didn't go for a GTT when pregnant with her.

Oodle - I had my glucose test in a hospital. Didn't need to fast or anything. They only let me drink Lucozade and after 1 hour took my blood sample. It didn't bother me as I think better be safe than sorry...just in case. And at the time I was 29 so nothing to do with age. I say go for it. Can't hurt, can it?

mum2bejan · 14/11/2007 17:48

I had glucose test a couple of weeks ago. I wasn't allowed anything but water from midnight day before. Then had test at 9.30 next morning and they took bloods 2 hours later.

I wonder why it varies - most people still seem to be told to fast beforehand. Surely if I have breakfast and then lucozade that will affect result? Apparently the hospital provide a leaflet but I was never given it. Generally pissed off with the rubbish care I'm getting this time round - 3rd pregnancy so nobody seems remotely bothered.

Hi, has anyone else had this test done without fasting first? The receptionist at the antenatal clinic said I didn't need to fast, just had to drink 280ml of Lucozade an hour before I came in for a blood test. Have been trying to check this is right but can never get through to the hospital. And do you think I need it at all? I'm 38 but no family history of diabetes, not overweight, no previous big babies etc.

Thanks!

sounds dodgy to me. if you haven't fasted they might want to give you a blood sugar test before you drink the lucozade. can you ring back & try & talk to a midwife?

SHEENA1 · 19/11/2007 18:28

you need to fast 12 house baefor you have this or you get taken back in to do it all over again
ur not even allowed to drink anything in the 12 hours

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 19/11/2007 18:36

I am confused as to why you need to have the test at all.

I would speak to your MW and ask her to find out why you have been called.

Oodle · 19/11/2007 20:46

Thanks for your messages. Has anyone else taken this test? Did you have to fast? Can't face not eating or drinking for 12 hours unless absolutely necessary!

Fasted for 12 hours, drunk sugary drink given to me at the hospital, then had a blood test an hour or two later.

Yorky · 19/11/2007 21:02

I tested positive for sugar in urine twice so had to go to hospital after 12hr fast, have blood test, drink lucozade wait an hour, then more blood taken

Oodle · 21/11/2007 13:40

Finally got to the bottom of this if anyone is interested - for future reference. At my hospital they do a 'glucose screen' first - no fasting required, you drink 280ml of Lucozade original at home then come into the hospital to have your blood tested an hour later. If that test shows high blood sugar levels then you have the Glucose Tolerance Test which involves fasting for 12 hours beforehand.

Thanks for your help everyone - had the screen this morning and hoping that's the last I'll hear about it!
