Hi ladies - just wondering if any of you ladies who had a c section with a higher BMI can answer a quick question, how long did you take Blood thinners after your op? Did you have any problems with taking them? My BMI is 37 so I'm assuming I'll need to take them - just like to know what to expect - TIA x

I did, twice!
I self injected for 10 days (I think) after the first one and then for 6 weeks after the second.

Oh and no problems except I can’t get rid of my bloody sharps bin as no chemist will take them in because of covid.

CherryMaple · 02/05/2021 23:00

I got DH to inject my abdomen - I’m squeamish, and I couldn’t face doing it myself. It was a few days. It was fine.

I don't recall taking them at all tbh. Confused

Cantbebotheredtothinkofaname · 02/05/2021 23:03

I took them for 10 days. No problems although a got a little lump in the area which lasted for much longer than it took for the c section scar to stop hurting Grin

CooperLooper · 02/05/2021 23:03

BMI of 39 and I had to take the blood thinning injections for 6 weeks (got husband to do it into my belly fat!). This was Dec last year. Had no issues with disposing at a chemist even with Covid either so it must vary by area.

Be warned, they sting! Rubbing it immediately afterwards makes the stinging worse so try not to. You'll also get some really cool coloured bruises too. But it's really not so bad and it'll just become routine.

Good luck!

paralysedbyinertia · 02/05/2021 23:04

I certainly didn't inject myself. Don't remember taking any medication either, but might have done in the first seven days or so - that bit was all a bit of a blur!

SingingWaffleDoggy · 02/05/2021 23:05

I’ve got them for 10 days. Don’t think it’s dependent on BMI but might be wrong. Some hardly hurt at all and others sting like hell, no rhyme or reason

Littlegoth · 02/05/2021 23:07

Took them for 12 weeks after c section ... plus the 8 months before it!

Will have to do the same in any future pregnancies. I hated needles before that, now they don’t bother me!

Good luck

BMI was 36 at booking with my last, elcs as breech twins. 6 weeks of injections after surgery.
My consultant is putting me on thinners from 28 weeks this pregnancy until 6 weeks after birth. A combination of BMI (32), age and being on baby number 6 put me high risk for clots.

blueleonburger · 03/05/2021 07:44

It'll depend if you have other issues in your health history too, but your BMI will mean you get at least 10 days. If you have more issues, you'll get 6 weeks.

mamababy1955555 · 03/05/2021 07:58

Same as PPs: 10 days after first (unexpected) section. This time from 28 weeks and expecting to inject until 6 weeks after scheduled section.

Jade86 · 03/05/2021 08:21

I’m currently 38 weeks and am having to taking daily injections due to my vte, and have been told that I will need to take them for 6 weeks after delivery x

polkadotpixie · 03/05/2021 08:35

My BMI is 24 but I still had to have blood thinner injections after my c section, I thought it was standard after a c section regardless of BMI?

zeromango · 03/05/2021 09:12

I had injections for 6 weeks after my c section - I gained a huge amount of weight. (I was 17 stone after DD was born) my DP did the injections for me, much easier Smile
