Baby blankets

I'm due Sept and just wondering about baby blankets...how many will I need? What style/thickness? Is this all that baby will need when sleeping? In the pram? Coming home?
I know it may sound trivial but starting to make a list of items to buy.

Cotton cellular blankets are good. They regulate temperature well and have holes in so safer against accidental suffocation. We bought about 4-5 to have backups in case of spitting/nappy leakages. Baby can sleep under a tucked in cellular blanket in the crib until big enough for sleeping bags, and same in the pram (though maybe double up outside if cold).

I like cellular blankets when they are small, we have 3 of those. We have loads of other blankets in a mixture of materials. When they are bigger I prefer the sleeping bags for in bed as they can't wriggle out of them.

Yes I did a baby course last weekend (Baby Academy free 2 hour course - really good) but they said cellular blankets are best so they don’t overheat

Definitely cellular blankets. I had about 5 or 6 and they help protect against suffocation and let baby regulate temperature.
Cellular blanket and muslins are the things I used all the time.

Thank you all for your help!

I've bought a few packs of muslin cloths already so will keep stocking up and will find some cellular blankets! ☺️

I find smaller pram blankets are best, and only need one or two as you will probably get a few as gifts. I didnt use blankets in the cot, so just need one that goes over the carseat (over top of the harness), or over the bouncer/them during daytime naps.

Never had any cellular ones.

Caspianberg · 01/05/2021 16:16

I never used cellular blankets either

Thin Muslin swaddles the first 2 months to swaddle baby to sleep

Then sleeping bags to sleep in.

In pram he has footmuff when cold ( so 6/7 months of the year)

So use the thin swaddle blankets as light pram blankets in summer, and 2-3 small blankets for use in pram/ over car seat/ etc. We have a lovely one from little green sheep we use the most.

They are currently on offer in Aldi - baby event. A few different colours to choose from. Along with muslins and other lovely bits. And free delivery over a certain amount.

penguin7 · 01/05/2021 16:32

@Cb1987 thank you! Will take a look now.

Would anyone recommended a good baby chair/seat? There's a few I like but seem so expensive.

@penguin7 - I love our babybjorn but they are a bit pricey. We were lucky as it was a gift from aunt. Worth looking at secondhand also.

I have seen ‘babylo’ do a similar version much cheaper on Amazon which could be good

I've always been a bit unclear about what baby blankets are supposed to do. We had muslins to soak up sick, grobags for sleeping, snowsuits for walks. We had one and barely ever used it.

Grobags are a relatively "new" thing - i personally don't like using them - too many variables on the instructions depending on tog weight vs room temperature - much less stressful to add a blanket or take one off

If you are so inclined take your knitting - i knitted all my baby blankets

My twins were in NICU for several weeks - the only blankets which were used were cellular ones and ones knitted by local charities
