subchorionic hematoma & no fetal pole

Hi all,

Looking for advice and perhaps a bit of reassurance. I'm 5 + 5 and had an early scan today. No fetal pole was detected, just the yolk sac therefore the sonography couldn't confirm a viable pregnancy. They also found a subchorionic hematoma which I didn't have in my previous pregnancy.

Has anyone else had this and ended up a positive outcome? I am worried there is no fetal pole at this stage Sad I can't stop crying!

This is why early scans are such a dreadful idea

Sorry that wasn’t overly helpful. The haematoma will likely heal itself and is common. The foetal pole is first visible between 5.5 and 6.5 weeks generally so to be honest, you’d probably need another scan down the line to see how things are going as either it’s not a viable pregnancy OR you’re just too early to see it

You're right and my husband is of the same option, sometimes having early scans do more harm than good (emotionally wise). They call them 'reassurance' scans but safe to say it's achieved the complete opposite. Thank you for your advice, I'll wait a few weeks and in the meantime have everything crossed things progress and the SH disappears!

Also it could even be that your dates are slightly off so you think you’re 5+5 but you’re actually measuring more like 5! I know with my first, the first 2 scans I had measured the baby at a different age than I was expecting. At that size and gestation, even a day makes a huge difference Flowers

I had a early scan last week at 5+4 only showed sac and yolk, had a repeat scan yesterday at 6+3 showed baby with heartbeat x

My subchorionic haematoma didn’t resolve itself until I was about 25 weeks. It didn’t interfere with the pregnancy though. (I had lots of scans due to other reasons). As for the feral pole, I’m sorry to say that early scans are a really bad idea. I hope you manage to find some equilibrium until your 12 week scan.

Thank you so much to all of you for taking the time to reply. Amazing how just a few days can make such a difference; bodies are so clever aren't they! Also reassuring to hear you can have a SH without it causing any problems. Re dates, I could be off by a few days which would explain the missing fetal pole. Your messages have certainly made me less emotional and I'll wait a week or so until another scan. 🙏🏻

I had a scan at 6 weeks and no foetal pole - just a sac. Now 11 weeks and everything seems fine so far. Google told me it’s quite common to see no foetal pole until as late as 9 weeks in some cases
