High B12 levels

Hi,
My midwife told me today my B12 levels have tested high, which can be just as dangerous as too low. I haven't been taking B vitamin supplements, only pregnacare max, Active iron & vitamin D. I was surprised at this as I'm a vegetarian (pescatarian since pregnancy).
After googling foods with high B12 I've discovered it's my entire diet (dairy, beans, cereal, salmon, greens). I'm not sure it's a good idea to change this diet or give up the supplements.
Has anyone else experienced this & do you have any advice?
Thanks

This is confusing as i have b12 injections. On my last blood test mine was high but the doctor said that doesnt matter. Maybe worth talking to your GP if your worried. X

I don’t think vitamin b12 being too high is as dangerous as being too low. Mine was 1000% over the limit and no one has said anything to me. Being too low can be linked to neural tube defects but the nhs website doesn’t say anything about it being too high xx

Do you know what exactly the level is?

Having high b12 can I believe sometimes indicate other conditions. From what I understand it is only harmful if your kidneys aren’t functioning properly (but I may be misremembering that). Generally there is no problem with it being high, although some doctors get a bit twitchy. I’m having to have an appointment about the high b12 level recorded at my booking in appointment. I’m interested to hear what they say because I have b12 injections so I know exactly why it’s high!

I don't know my exact level, she didn't tell me. I found a study (& many arguing against the validity of the study, it's important to mention) that showed high levels of B12 & high foliate levels in pregnancy can raise the risk of autism by about 17%. There was a lot of websites that mentioned this, of course it made me panic.
I'm aware I'm half way through the pregnancy & they do these tests so we can fix the problems so I'm not too worried. I think I will speak to my GP and request another test.
And stop googling.

swimmerowl sorry to resurface an old thread but I’m really worrying as read similar when I realised my pregnancy vitamin has 1600% of rda of B12 and 200% rda folate.

Please may I ask whether your GP commented/ was reassuring? I’ve sent myself into a panic too and taken excessive vitamins for 2 months, now 18 weeks pregnant. I’d thought they were a really good brand and now really doubting them!

Hi Wildrobin,
I wonder if you're still there... I've just had a similar experience, tested really high on B12 and have sent myself into a panic about the risks to the baby (I'm trying to conceive at the moment). How did everything go for you? I think B12 is supposed to be water soluble so should fall hopefully quite quickly when you stop taking it... fingers crossed.

alex42 that is so good you realised and can reduce how much you take now you know ; I really did worry myself and panic too! But DS is now a wonderful, healthy toddler and very people-orientated and friendly .

i hope things go so well for you and I ended up enjoying videos on you tube called Nourish by Melanie which have lots of interesting topics relating to pre-pregnancy too you might find calming as they might give you positive things you can do too. For example I think if you research vitamin D and omega oils these both have a link with reducing likelihood of ASD . I found it calming to research positive things I could do eg I read somewhere that fish oils in pregnancy can cut allergy risk (obviously need to be suitable ones for pregnancy) and probiotics can reduce the incidence of eczema . Sadly I forget the name of a brilliant website I found with peer reviewed research but I did calm my anxiety to find helpful things like eating walnuts etc! .

@Wildrobin - thank you so much for your kind reply, I really appreciate it!! So happy to hear everything has gone well for you and your little one. And thank you so much for those tips - I will definitely start trying to focus my mind on the positive steps I can take, and try to stop dwelling on the B12 drama! Thanks again Daffodil

It's now 2 years later and my baby didn't have any issues. I now have a 2nd and I monitored my B12 throughout the pregnancy. Both children seem to be developing normally.

Thank you for updating @Swimmerowl . I have found myself in a similar position with high folate and b12 levels at potentially around 4 weeks pregnant after an IVF transfer. I’ve stopped supplementing, but am so worried I’m too late!
